The Importance of God's Word

Commentary by Charles Whitaker (1944-2021)

God's Word, when feared and respected, serves as a restraining force against unbridled carnality. Without respect for His Word, people run wild, casting off restraint, becoming ungovernable, and allowing law and order to disappear. Those who remain faithful to the instruction of God and His Word are blessed, as it works to restrain individuals and communities from the excesses of rampant carnality. When respected and obeyed, God's Word is a positive good in any society or culture. As a people lose sight of God's Word as His revelation to them, they witness their nation becoming less governed by law and more by political opportunists, making them easy prey for the flattering lies of the lawless man. Considering the trends in the suppression of God's Word around the world, the time when the lawless man will be plainly seen is not far off.

How Can We Trust the Bible?

CGG Weekly by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In a generation obsessed with authenticity, many young people question the reliability of Scripture, deeming it inauthentic because it relies on others' experiences with Deity rather than personal encounters. They argue that to be truly authentic, one must experience God individually, constructing a personal spirituality that feels real and actual, rather than accepting ancient texts as truth. Under this view, the Bible cannot be trusted as it lacks individual, personal validation, and each person becomes the final arbiter of truth, selecting only the parts of Scripture they agree with. Yet, for those who seek to trust in God's Word, the question remains: How do we know the words of Scripture are accurate and trustworthy? This has long been a point of contention, as accepting the Bible as God's Word to humanity is a foundational step. Various reasons anchor this trust, such as the fulfillment of prophecies with complete accuracy, the preservation of the Bible over centuries, and the transformative impact it has on lives. These elements collectively provide substantial proof for the reliability of God's Word. Moreover, Jesus Christ Himself offers insight into why we can trust Scripture. As the Word of God, His defense against critics who judge by human, physical standards highlights their failure to recognize the spiritual element. He declares that the Father bears witness to Him, revealing a divine intervention that opens minds to His truth. Before this calling, doubt in the Bible's message was common, but once the Father draws us, trust in His Word—both Christ and Scripture—begins to form. This spiritual guidance is why we can rely on the Bible as a gift from God, personally given to His children to illuminate their path toward His Kingdom and to teach them to live abundant lives.
