The Sixth Commandment
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsAnger without a cause toward another human being breaks the sixth commandment, because the commandment reaches beyond the act of killing to the attitude behind it (Matthew 5:21-24). Murder begins in the heart, the mind and core of a person's character, where Satan festers hate and anger. Thought precedes action, and hatred precedes murder. Anyone who harbors these evil traits fosters the spirit of murder, and whoever hates another person breaks the sixth commandment. The apostles summarize the commandments in the same way, teaching that love fulfills them and that hating a brother leaves a person in darkness (Romans 13:9; I John 2:8-11). The attitude of murder originates with Satan, who was the first to have it and has promoted it ever since (Ezekiel 28:14-16; John 8:44). Cain's murder of Abel, strife, and unrestrained desires all show where it leads (I John 3:11-12; James 4:1-2). A person who nurses this hatred shares Satan's arrogant pride, and a murderer will not enter God's Kingdom (Galatians 5:21; I John 3:15). Instead of anger, Christians must treat others, even enemies, with kindness, gentleness, and love, leaving vengeance to God alone (Romans 12:19-21; Matthew 5:43-44).
