The Priesthood of God (Part Nine)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

In the arrangement of the ancient Israelite encampments and temple structure, a distinct order was maintained around the tabernacle, reflecting a profound spiritual hierarchy. The tribe of Levi, uniquely positioned at the center, surrounded the tabernacle, the symbolic dwelling place of God, and served as the last line of defense should an attack breach the outer tribes. No other tribe was permitted to camp closer to the tabernacle than a Sabbath day's journey, emphasizing the sacred separation and the exclusive role of the Levites in proximity to God's presence. Within the temple layout, a series of courts further delineated access to the sacred space. Closest to the temple was the court of the priests, where they could approach nearer to the holy areas than others. Beyond this was the court of the men, marking the limit of their proximity, followed by the court of the women, and finally, the outermost area for the rest of the nation and Gentiles, who were strictly warned against encroaching further under penalty of death. This structured gradation underscores the privileged access granted to the priests, highlighting their crucial role in the worship and service under the Old Covenant, a system that illustrates the path to holiness and the preparation for service in God's kingdom.
