Perseverance and Hope
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughIn the midst of life's trials and uncertainties, our hope must be firmly anchored in Jesus Christ. He is not merely the source of promises like resurrection or eternal life in the Kingdom of God, but the very Object of our hope. Our confident expectation and patient endurance for salvation rest on His character, integrity, and power. As the foundation of our earnest yearning, He is both the Source and the Object of our faith, hope, and love, driving us to persevere through difficulties rather than passively wait them out. Jesus Christ is our hope because of what He has done in the past as our Savior, what He is doing in the present as our High Priest, and what He will do in the future based on His unassailable promises and character. Our relationship is with a living Being, not mere words or doctrines, and it is through this personal connection that we find the motivation to overcome trials and grow spiritually. Our hope is not in the promises themselves, but in Him who made them, for only He has the power and holiness to fulfill them. This living hope, guaranteed by His resurrection, assures us that our endurance is not in vain. His life, character, and virtues becoming evident in us through the indwelling of His Spirit provide certainty that carries beyond the grave. As our model, He endured suffering and death, yet was resurrected, giving us assurance that our hope in God will lead to the same victory. Thus, we are called to look to Him, to make a stand against life's storms, and to strive continually for a higher level of spiritual maturity, knowing that He is the immovable Rock holding us steady. Jesus Christ is our anchor, and in Him, we find the strength to face turbulent times with unwavering resolve.
The Elements of Motivation (Part Three): Hope
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughJesus Christ stands as the central Object of Hope for Christians, embodying a unique and enduring expectation of future good. Our hope is directly linked to God's calling, a summons into His presence that fosters a relationship with Him, transforming despair into a confident, optimistic life filled with endless possibilities both now and beyond the grave. This hope, unlike fleeting worldly aspirations, is continuous and grounded in the reality of a living Savior. Jesus Christ, along with the Father, exerts sovereign control, ensuring that Their promises are dependable and true, for They cannot lie. Our hope flows from an inexhaustible Source, sustained by God's revelation and work in us, expressed through trust, patience, endurance, and an eagerness to continue. It is a powerful motivator, driving us to persevere and endure hardships, as Jesus Himself declared that those who endure to the end shall be saved. This hope serves as a defense, protecting us from losing sight of the glorious end of God's purpose, propelling us forward even in the face of trials. Anchored in Jesus Christ, our High Priest who has entered the heavenly Holy of Holies on our behalf, this hope stabilizes our lives amidst tempests. His blood justifies us, and His life saves us as He intercedes and watches over us to bring us into the Father's Kingdom. This assurance motivates us to fulfill our part in the relationship established through God's calling and Christ's sacrifice, knowing that the means to achieve our wonderful goal come from God, who is absolute and all-powerful.
