Is the Christian Required To Do Works? (Part Four)

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

Humanity's rebellion against God has led to widespread devastation through sin, culminating in a crisis that will climax with Christ's return. Jesus Christ voluntarily sacrificed His life to provide forgiveness and access to God, as confirmed in Romans 5:1-2, where justification by faith through Him grants us peace with God and hope in His glory. This justification, a gift from God based on Christ's perfect works, aligns us with God's legal standard, allowing a relationship with Him to begin. Only Christ, among all who have been born, could offer a sacrifice of sufficient value for our atonement, and our gracious Creator accounts His righteousness to those who believe and repent. Beyond justification, God's purpose includes the ongoing work of Jesus Christ as our High Priest, who continues to labor in us after His resurrection. As promised in John 14:18 and 23, He does not leave us as orphans but comes to us, making a home with the Father in those who love Him and keep His word. He washes us of our sins through His blood and works to separate us from our natural love of sin and the world, instilling a new principle of life to make us holy in our actions and reactions. This sanctification, distinct from justification, prepares us for living in God's Kingdom and enables a godly witness before men. God's purpose is not merely to save us but to save us with character reflecting His image, as seen in Hebrews 6:1, urging us to move toward perfection beyond the foundation of repentance and faith. Romans 5:9-10 emphasizes that, having been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him, and reconciled through His death, we are saved by His life. As Head of the church and our intercessor, He inspires, corrects, and equips us with gifts to fulfill our responsibilities, creating in us a clean heart in the character image of the Father. Sanctification, requiring our submission and cooperation with Almighty God, is essential to complete His purpose for us, ensuring we are fit for the holy environment of His Kingdom.
