What Do You Fear? (Part Three)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. A sound mind banishes irrational fears, which are groundless and rooted in falsehood, by providing the ability to discern truth and react with prudence and discretion. As long as we focus our fear on God, we need not fear anything else. The proper fear of God, paired with a sound mind from His Spirit, produces wisdom and understanding, offering priceless insight into living rightly. If we stay focused on fearing God, we grow and overcome by making right choices, ultimately aiming for resurrection into His Family. However, fearing things other than God stunts spiritual growth and fosters self-centeredness. Love, as an antidote to fear, casts out torment, for perfect love leaves no room for fear. This perfecting of love is a process, not an instant act, and comes only from God, the source of perfect love. By deepening our relationship with Him through prayer, study, and experiencing life with Him, His love grows within us. As we experience His faithfulness, the falsehoods at the root of irrational fears are exposed, and those fears fade. With an ever-increasing faith in His character and a focus on this relationship, self-centeredness diminishes, and there is no space for other fears. Irrational fears are banished by faith, love, and truth, all of which thrive only within a relationship with God through His powerful Spirit.
