The Solid Foundation of God

Sermonette by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The foundation of our spiritual temple is perfect, with Jesus Christ Himself as the chief cornerstone, built upon the apostles and the prophets whom He inspired. As described in Ephesians 2:20, this foundation is unshakeable. Yet, we play a crucial role in relation to this sure foundation. First, we are the ground on which it is laid, as illustrated in Luke 6:47-49. Like the wise man who built his house on the rock by hearing and acting on Christ's sayings, we must dig deep, applying God's principles through obedience and love, making our faith immovable. In contrast, the foolish man, who heard but did not act, built without a foundation and collapsed under trial. Second, we are responsible for how we build upon this foundation, as Paul explains in I Corinthians 3:10-13. No other foundation can be laid than that of Jesus Christ, and we must take heed how we construct upon it, whether with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw. Each one's work will be tested by fire, revealing its quality, for God is building a strong temple and desires each of us to be firmly anchored to the rock. Trials will come to test our building, and we must prepare by using the sound principles of God's Word with caution. Paul further instructs in II Timothy 2:19-21 that the solid foundation of God stands firm, sealed with the assurance that the Lord knows those who are His and calls everyone naming Christ to depart from iniquity. By cleansing ourselves from dishonor, we become vessels for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. Thus, we must build carefully on this foundation, remembering our calling and commission to pursue holiness, ensuring we are ready for whatever God desires of us as part of His temple.
