Worthy to Take the Scroll

'Prophecy Watch' by David C. Grabbe

In Revelation 5, John witnesses a sealed scroll in the right hand of the Most High God, seated on His throne, symbolizing judgment or legal authority. This scroll, unlike others in prophecy, is not merely a record of judgments but represents a sealed title deed. Its sealing indicates that only the rightful owner, the one redeeming the property, has the authority to open it. The contents are not entirely secret, as much of what the seals reveal—religious deception, wars, famines, pestilences, earthquakes, deaths of God's servants, signs in the heavens, and the future Kingdom—has been spoken of by the prophets and expanded in Jesus' Olivet Prophecy. This open knowledge acts as an accessible deed, while the sealed scroll awaits the proper time for redemption. John weeps intensely, overwhelmed by the significance of this title deed, which encompasses the ownership of all creation. The scroll's importance lies in the redemption of the world, currently under Satan's sway, as humanity's first parents chose his kingdom. The weight of an unredeemed deed, allowing Satan to remain ruler, burdens John deeply. After the Lamb takes the scroll, the four living creatures and twenty-four elders praise Him for redeeming a diverse people, making them a kingdom and priests. Every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, and in the sea joins in blessing and honoring the Lamb, who alone is worthy to open the sealed deed, having paid the ultimate price for His property. The Lamb, identified as the Lion of the tribe of Judah and the Root of David, has conquered and thus can open the scroll and its seven seals. The rejoicing that follows centers on His worthiness to take the scroll, even before opening it, as it signifies the impending redemption. As the seals are opened, they reveal a world in turmoil, with the current ruler striving to retain control while the Redeemer claims what He has created and purchased. The sounding of the last trumpet of the Seventh Seal completes the redemption of the earth, alongside the resurrection of the firstfruits, finalizing the ultimate restoration of ownership.

The Lamb of Revelation (Part Two)

'Prophecy Watch' by David C. Grabbe

The scroll in the heavenly vision of Revelation bears the characteristics of a title deed, representing the title deed of all creation. A title deed defines a specific property and the rightful owner of that property. The only One worthy to take this scroll and open its seals is the Lamb that had been slain. The illustration is not of a lamb giving its life as a sin offering, but of a Lamb redeeming what belongs to Him. The scope of this redemption is not limited to Israel or the church, but depicts Jesus Christ as the Creator, Heir, and Owner of all things. The opening of the scroll's seals results in cataclysm, as not everyone accepts the Lamb's claim. Ultimately, as announced by angels in Revelation 11:15, the kingdoms of this world become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever. All human governments have already been purchased, and all that remains is for the Lamb to redeem what is lawfully His.

The Lamb of Revelation

Sermonette by David C. Grabbe

In Revelation, John refers to Christ as the Lamb more than any other designation because of His role of Redeemer, which is different from a sin offering.

Worthy to Take the Scroll

Sermonette by David C. Grabbe

The sealed scroll most resembles a title deed, which can only be opened by the redeemer of the property. The rightful owner of the title deed is Jesus Christ.

Drawing Lines

Sermonette by Joseph B. Baity

The lines separating morality from immorality are blurred. We must recognize these lines and redraw them where we have allowed them to become blurred.
