Submitting is repugnant to the carnal mind. In contrast, God instructs His family to summit to one another in the "fear of Christ," as Ephesians 5:21, correctly translated, puts it. This fear is the exclusive possession of those who live by God's Holy Spirit. Wives are to submit to their husbands, "as to the Lord" (Ephesians 5:22); husbands are to love their wives "just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her" (Ephesians 5:25); children are to obey their parents "in the Lord" (Ephesians 6:1); employees are to obey their employers "as to Christ" (Ephesians 6:50). Like the ranks of a military organization, submission operates only when selflessness replaces selfishness and humility replaces self-assertiveness. The church is no place for people who demand their own way. The ministers God has set in His church must emulate shepherds who lead by example rather than policemen who drive by external authority. God's people, using I Corinthians 13 as a checklist, must learn not to let their physical and spiritual gifts puff them up, looking down on other people. At some point in their spiritual journey, every member of God's family will look into Christ's eyes, just as the apostle Peter did after he had denied His Lord three times. We will all have to give account of our stewardship of His gifts and consequently should feel motivated to glorify His name by submitting to one another "in the fear of Christ."
