Jesus Christ, the Bearer of Sin
David C. Grabbe
Sermonette; #1472s; 19 minutes
The azazel goat symbolizes Christ's bearing our grief, pain, and iniquity on the cross. This second goat in the Atonement sin offering, serving as a type of Jesus Christ, symbolically bore the pain, humiliation, and shame of our sins. Isaiah emphasizes that sin causes intense suffering in our life, finally culminating in death. Hebrews 9:28 repeats Isaiah's description of Christ carrying the burden of sins. I Peter 2:24 indicates that Christ bore these sins in agony on a tree that was situated outside of the temple, away from the city, symbolic of the wilderness where the "fit man" led the azazel. In this role, the Messiah becomes accursed for our cumulative sins. Christ died outside the gate, after becoming a curse, fulfilling the role of the azazel goat.
