Extremes of Idolatry: Graven Images and Sacred Names

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Concerning the third commandment, there are those who adhere to the Sacred Name doctrine, asserting that God can only be addressed by the Hebrew name YHWH and Jesus by the Hebrew Yeshua. They refuse to use terms like God or LORD, insisting on Yah, Yahweh, or Yeshua, and reject Christ because it derives from Greek. According to their reasoning, God will not respond to any name but the Hebrew ones, claiming other names are tied to pagan gods. However, Leviticus 19:12, a restatement of the third commandment, expands its meaning to prohibit using God's name in insincere swearing or in ways that dishonor Him through speech or conduct. It forbids taking His name in vain, covering profanity and euphemisms, but does not specify which name of God to use or mandate correct pronunciation. There are no biblical commands restricting God's name to Yahweh or Yah, despite claims using certain scriptures. God's name encompasses many forms, such as the LORD, El Shaddai, and others, each revealing something about His nature. Jesus directs us to pray, "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Your name," without specifying a single name, as He has many to meditate upon. The language used for these names is irrelevant; it is the meaning that matters. By focusing solely on pronouncing God's name in one way, these individuals elevate their idea above God's intent, turning it into an idol and missing the broader spiritual purpose of the commandment to honor Him in all things.

Don't Be Indifferent (2010)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Labor-saving technology seems to have had the effect of separating us from each other and making us indifferent to things that should be important to us.
