Still Producing Fruit?
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughHearing the word of God without producing fruit leads to failure in multiple categories of response. Those by the wayside hear yet the devil takes the word from their hearts lest they believe and be saved. Those on the rock hear and receive the word with joy yet they have no root and in time of temptation fall away. Those among thorns hear yet they are choked with cares riches and pleasures of life and bring no fruit to maturity. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit nor can a bad tree bear good fruit and every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Those who hear yet fail to keep the word observe it and bear fruit with patience or hupomone or endurance do not complete their sanctification. They drift away after reaching a certain point by putting their talent in a hole and doing nothing with it. They coast after past accomplishments and get farther from the goal. They trade fiery sins for apathy pride selfishness and slothfulness while mistaking apathy for godly serenity. They cease dreaming and setting goals once in old age despite having the most knowledge wisdom wealth and free time. God requires His people to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling by producing much fruit in every good work while increasing in the knowledge of God. Without abiding in the vine and working in the field no fruit appears and the branch is cast out withered gathered and burned.
