The Lamb of Revelation
Sermonette by David C. GrabbeIn Revelation, John refers to Christ as the Lamb more than any other designation because of His role of Redeemer, which is different from a sin offering.
The Lamb of Revelation (Part One)
'Prophecy Watch' by David C. GrabbeIn the book of Revelation, Jesus Christ is predominantly referred to as the Lamb, a title used in twenty-eight instances, contrasting sharply with the apocalyptic visions of destruction, plagues, and death that define the text. Amidst the upheaval where God overturns the present order, and men and demons resist with futile strength, Jesus is resoundingly identified as the Lamb. This title evokes curiosity, especially when considering the trumpet plagues, the bowls of God's wrath, and men pleading with mountains to hide them from the wrath of the Lamb. Unlike the passive, uncomplaining submission associated with lambs, as seen in Jesus' first coming where He was led as a sheep to the slaughter without defense or retaliation, the Lamb of Revelation embodies a powerful force of judgment and ruin. This stark difference from the Lamb of the Gospels prompts a deeper exploration into why Revelation so consistently uses this imagery to depict Jesus during such cataclysmic events.
The Lamb of Revelation (Part Two)
'Prophecy Watch' by David C. GrabbeThe Lamb's role centers on redemption, which involves claiming ownership of what belongs to Him as Creator and Heir of all things. This theme appears from the earliest scriptural uses of lambs for buying back the firstborn and extends to the future deliverance of the church at the resurrection, when the purchased possession receives full redemption from the flesh. In Revelation 5 the Lamb takes the scroll, understood as the title deed to all creation, because His blood has redeemed people from every nation to become a kingdom of priests. He then opens its seals, initiating events that demonstrate His lawful claim. The sixth seal reveals the Lamb filled with wrath, as rulers and people of every status hide in terror from His face and declare that the great day of His wrath has come. This wrath arises from His zeal for what is His, producing the necessary destruction to realign creation with His government rather than to provide atonement. The same shaking of the heavens and earth appears in Christ's Olivet Prophecy, where it signals that redemption draws near. Later visions reinforce the pattern, showing the 144,000 redeemed from the earth standing with the Lamb and the victors over the beast singing the song of the Lamb alongside the song of Moses, which recounts God's redemption of Israel from Egypt. In the end the Lamb redeems the church, Israel, Jerusalem, the land, and all who have not rejected Him, completing the purchase already secured by His blood.
