In the great spiritual battle that God's people face, the adversary known as Satan is revealed in various forms, each highlighting a distinct aspect of his character. In Revelation 12:3, he is referred to as the great red dragon. The term "great" underscores the magnitude of his power and activity in the world. "Red" emphasizes his murderous and bloodthirsty nature, evident throughout history. The imagery of "dragon" portrays his ferocious and intensely cruel disposition. This name particularly relates to his end-time character, when God removes all restraints, allowing him to fully manifest his natural tendencies.

Satan functions as the dragon who supplies power to the first beast rising from the sea, enabling its operations against God's purpose. This same dragon also empowers the second beast, the false prophet who rises from the earth, so that the two beasts together with the dragon constitute an evil trinity bent on deceiving humanity. The dragon directs an invisible hierarchy of demons that systematically works to destroy God's plan while making life miserable for people in every sphere of existence. Through the false prophet the dragon performs real signs and lying wonders that persuade vast numbers of people worldwide to support the first beast. These miracles serve to conceal the dragon's true intent, forcing choices upon everyone, including those whose names are written in the Book of Life of the Lamb. The dragon's influence extends beyond religion into political and economic structures, yet religion remains the critical arena because it most directly affects God's purpose. Those who discern these events and remain faithful to God avoid the deception that will engulf the rest of the world.

Satan appears in Scripture as a great fiery red dragon with seven heads, ten horns, and seven diadems upon his heads. His tail draws a third of the stars of heaven and casts them to the earth. This dragon stands before the woman who is about to give birth in order to devour her Child. The same dragon is explicitly identified as the serpent of old, the Devil and Satan, who deceives the entire world and is cast down to the earth together with his angels. Once cast down, the dragon persecutes the woman who gave birth to the male Child and directs his wrath against the inhabitants of the earth and sea because he knows his time is short. The dragon imagery therefore depicts the commander of a vast host of fallen angels who once held positions of authority on the earth but left their proper domain, mounted an attack against God, and were defeated. Their original realm of responsibility became a place of restraint, a silo or pit in which they are now chained under darkness awaiting judgment. The dragon remains the king over these demons, exercising rule through deceit, division, and direct opposition to those who receive God's Spirit. This portrait connects directly to the believer's pilgrimage. Although baptism and the gift of the Holy Spirit do not remove Satan's attention, they place the disciple in the path of a being whose power is limited by God's sovereign boundaries. The dragon and his forces cannot act beyond what God permits, and they are restrained by their own rebellious character, their fear of God, and the superior number and ministry of holy angels who serve the heirs of salvation. Victory is assured because the one who defeated the dragon already lives in those who hold their position and refuse to yield to his stratagems.
