How Was it Accomplished So Easily? (Part Five)
Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)Satan, as the deceiver of the whole world, employs lying as a primary tool to mislead both angelic beings and humanity. From the beginning of mankind's creation, he has used deception to achieve his ends, convincing one third of the angels to abandon their roles as ministering spirits to mankind and depart from serving and glorifying God. His influence extends globally, inspiring a widespread proclivity for lying that affects massive cultural changes, as people often accept falsehoods without verifying their truthfulness. Scripture affirms that beyond deceiving angels, Satan has misled the entire world, intensifying his efforts as the end times approach. His power of deception, allowed to increase as God withdraws His hedge of protection, specifically targets the called of God with heightened and illusory deceit, aiming to mislead even the elect.
The Beast and Religion
Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)When God declares that Satan has deceived the entire world, He means precisely that—the entire world, not merely its religious aspect. Satan, aptly named Abaddon and Apollyon, a destroyer, heads a government-like structure with various departments exercising authority, using his invisible hierarchy of demons to attempt to destroy God's purpose. Though he will not succeed, he makes life miserable for nearly everyone along the way. Satan is organized in his operations to deceitfully and systematically undermine God's plan. Religion holds the greatest significance to God's purpose and mankind's quality of life, being the only specific area of life, apart from prophesied natural events, that God directly includes in His end-time warnings. Satan's deception is evident in the operations of the beast and the false prophet, as described in Revelation 13:11-15. The false prophet, a religious figure, performs great signs and lying wonders to persuade people to support the beast, deceiving onlookers worldwide. These miracles, though real, hide Satan's true intent, influencing billions to align with the beast and the false prophet. The worldwide political, economic, and social circumstances amplify the persuasive power of these deceptions, forcing individuals to make critical choices about their lives. Jesus' first warning in the Olivet Prophecy to beware of deception underscores the importance of maintaining a clear understanding of one's position before God to avoid being misled by Satan's schemes.
Behind Enemy Lines: Lucifer, Helel, and Satan
Sermonette by Clyde FinkleaSatan is the great deceiver who continuously works to mislead humanity. In Revelation 12:9, he is described as the one who deceives the whole world, a constant aspect of his character and activity. He employs numerous methods of deception, including lying against the truth, denying the truth, counterfeiting or imitating the truth, and perverting or distorting the truth. Satan uses many traps and tricks to lead people astray from the truth of God. Despite his persistent efforts, believers are reminded of their victory through the triumph of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the true Light-bearer. Additionally, Satan is a defeated foe, and the God of peace will soon crush him under the feet of His followers, as promised in Romans 16:20.
Being Deceived
Sermon by Clyde FinkleaSatan functions as the ongoing deceiver of the whole world through continuous activity that never ceases until the entire earth is misled. Revelation 12:9 identifies the great dragon, the serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, as the one who deceives the whole world after being cast to the earth with his angels. The Greek construction of the verb stresses an active, persistent influence whereby he causes people to miss the truth of God through multiple methods, including lying against the truth, denying it, counterfeiting or imitating it, and perverting or distorting it. He mixes portions of truth with error, functioning as a master craftsman who twists what is accurate in order to lead others astray. This deceptive work operates both inside and outside the church. Satan transforms himself into an angel of light, enabling his ministers to appear as ministers of righteousness and false prophets to come in sheep's clothing while inwardly acting as ravenous wolves. He inspires individuals to pervert the straight ways of the Lord and to draw disciples after themselves by speaking perverse things that distort and misinterpret Scripture. In the last days this activity intensifies, as Revelation 13:14 shows him deceiving those who dwell on the earth through signs performed in the sight of the beast, prompting them to create an image to the beast. Ephesians 2:2 describes him as the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who continuously energizes the sons of disobedience with satanic deceptions, viewpoints, doubts, and temptations that fill the atmosphere day and night. Christ warns repeatedly in Matthew 24 that false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect, confirming that Satan's target remains God's people. Protection from such deception requires diligent growth in the virtues listed in II Peter 1, beginning with faith and progressing through virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. Those who cultivate these qualities in abundance remain neither barren nor unfruitful, avoid spiritual blindness, and make their calling and election sure so that they will never stumble.
