The King of the South
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughAt the time of the end, a fierce conflict is prophesied between the king of the South, depicted as the aggressor, and the king of the North, portrayed as a longsuffering giant. The king of the South pushes, pokes, and terrorizes the king of the North, who eventually rises in a swift movement and crushes the king of the South so it cannot rise again. From the perspective of Jerusalem, the power center of the king of the South lies to the south, and this entity may conduct operations north of Jerusalem, attacking the king of the North and holding position for a time, though its base remains southward. The term "king" does not necessarily imply a hereditary monarch but can refer to any ruler or leader, whether president, prime minister, dictator, or charismatic figure, whose people follow their will. In the prophecy of Daniel 11:40, the king of the South reappears suddenly at the time of the end, engaging in conflict with the king of the North. Geographically, nations such as Egypt, Libya, and Ethiopia are mentioned as being under the influence or power of these kings, with Edom, Moab, and Ammon escaping conquest but remaining in the region. The Arab-Islamic peoples, with their heartland primarily south of Jerusalem in Arabia and still controlling Egypt, are suggested to hold the title of king of the South, especially since their center in Mecca lies south and somewhat east of Jerusalem. This entity, potentially representing an Islamic confederacy as described in Psalm 83, includes nations historically hostile to Israel, such as Ishmael, Edom, Ammon, Moab, Philistia, Tyre, and possibly Assyria, forming a group whose main enemy is Israel and, by extension, the West. Current events, including Islamic terrorism, immigration into the king of the North's territory, and cultural conflicts, may reflect this prophesied pushing at the king of the North, hinting at an imminent escalation as tensions rise.
