In the Wake of an Unnatural Disaster (Part Twelve)

Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

A significant portion of an individual's, corporation's, state's, or nation's wealth is derived from its lands, yielding resources such as water, salt, fruits, vegetables, meat, gold, silver, oil, uranium, and countless other treasures hidden beneath the surface. The federal government has acquired vast tracts of land, particularly in the western states, raising questions about the legality of such ownership under the Constitution, which limits federal land acquisition to specific purposes like military forts and arsenals. Despite this, the government controls substantial percentages of land in states like Nevada, Alaska, Utah, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, California, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado, potentially harboring immense underground wealth. Historically, ranchers grazed cattle freely on open range land, but the government has recently intervened, halting ranchers from using land their families have utilized for generations, resulting in confrontations and even a death. Suspicion lingers that the land, a fundamental source of wealth, is being unjustly taken, echoing past oppressions where control of land led to enslavement.

The Eighth Commandment

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

God affirms through the commandment in Exodus 20:15, "You shall not steal," the right of every human being to private property, emphasizing that no one has the authority to take it without lawful permission granted by Him. The earth belongs to the Lord, and He distributes it as He pleases, extending to all the opportunity to work lawfully for ownership of their own property. Materially, land is fundamentally the basis of wealth, as established in Numbers 33, where God intended each family to own property, particularly land, before they entered the Promised Land. Furthermore, in Numbers 27, He demonstrates that private ownership of wealth, especially land, is not restricted to men. In Leviticus 25:8, the law of the Jubilee year is defined, ensuring the restoration of land—and thus the potential for wealth—to the original family owners who lost it due to misfortune or mismanagement, allowing them the ability to accumulate wealth again through disciplined work. Other laws in Leviticus 22 through 27 address specific situations where property has been lost, sold, or devoted to earn money for God, providing opportunities for families to recover their land, even if it requires cost, to produce income until the next Jubilee. Through these principles, God underscores that land is a primary source of wealth and ensures mechanisms for its fair distribution and recovery among His people.

The Eighth Commandment

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

The possession of property, particularly land, serves as a visible measure of material worth across every community. God affirms the right to private property, as declared in Exodus 20:15, "You shall not steal," establishing that no one has the divine right to take another's property without lawful permission. The earth and all its fullness belong to the Lord, as stated in Psalm 24:1, and He grants it to whom He pleases, extending the right to all to work lawfully for ownership. Leviticus 25:23 confirms that the land ultimately belongs to Him, yet Numbers 33:53-54 reveals His intent for shared ownership, instructing that the land be divided by lot as an inheritance among families. God fully intended each family to own property, especially land, which He consistently shows as the fundamental basis of material wealth. Furthermore, Numbers 27 indicates that private ownership of land, and thus wealth, is not restricted to males. Through these principles, it is clear that land is a primary source of wealth, divinely sanctioned for possession and inheritance.

Mightier Than The Sword (Part Seventeen)

Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Communism stands in stark contrast to the principles of God regarding land ownership. The Communist Manifesto, published in 1848, declares in its first plank the abolition of property and the application of all rents of land to public purposes, meaning no private individual is allowed to own land or real estate. This principle reveals the depth of Communism's divergence from God's design, as it permits no privately held land, stripping individuals of independence and identity. Owning land grants a person significance, a sense of something to defend, even against their own government, and provides the means to earn a living and support a family. In contrast, when Israel was in Egypt, they owned nothing, especially not land, which defined their slavery and total dependence on others. God offered the Israelites the Promised Land to foster their cooperation and well-being, ensuring that each family would have their own land to prosper as an independent nation. Under Communism, even inheritance of land from ancestors is forbidden, reinforcing a state of enslavement akin to that under Pharaoh in Egypt, where everyone owed their life to the ruler.
