Confronting the Field of Battle
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsIn the face of spiritual warfare that engulfs our world, we are called to action, not to passivity. We must be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, as inspired by Christ through the apostle Paul. This strength is not our own, for we are unequal to the battle against the spiritual forces arrayed against us. Our power must come from Christ Himself, and with it, we are to fight with vigor against the most cunning and powerful foes. To engage in this struggle, we are commanded to put on the whole armor of God, enabling us to stand against the schemes of the devil. This armor is not merely defensive, with elements like the helmet, breastplate, and shield, but also offensive, with the sword of the Spirit, which serves both to protect and to attack. The call to put on this armor is proactive, urging us to take a stand, not just to react to assaults. This armor, detailed in Ephesians 6, includes truth as our belt, righteousness as our breastplate, the gospel of peace as our footwear, faith as our shield, salvation as our helmet, and the word of God as our sword. Each piece is a gift from Christ, who embodies truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation. Through Him, we are equipped for the relentless and lifelong struggle against evil. Furthermore, we are to be strong in the Lord before donning this armor, recognizing our dependence on His strength. The order is significant: first, be imbued with His power, then put on the armor. Both are essential for triumphant living of God's way of life. We must not rely solely on our own efforts to wield this armor, nor depend only on His strength without taking up the tools He provides. As we prepare for the spiritual battles now and for the future return with Christ, we must learn to use this armor proficiently. It is not just for the present conflict in this physical world, but also for the spiritual fight alongside Him when we are resurrected. Through constant prayer and supplication in the Spirit, as urged in Ephesians 6:18-19, we maintain a proactive stance, always watchful and persevering for all the saints. Thus, in this evil day, we stand firm, equipped by God through Christ, to withstand and to conquer, knowing that the victory is assured as we arm ourselves as commanded and persevere to the end.
Don't Be Indifferent (2010)
Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)In the critical times approaching the end, as described in the Scriptures, we are urged to remain vigilant and prepared. In I Thessalonians 5:8, we are instructed to be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. This imagery of armor reminds us of Ephesians 6, where satan is named as our direct enemy, and we are called to equip ourselves with the full armor of God to stand firm. This preparation is essential during the period leading up to Christ's return, when the pressure to maintain our spirituality will be intense. We must don this spiritual armor to fight the battles that lie ahead, ensuring we are not caught off guard by the distractions and deceptions of this world.
Darts
Sermon by John O. ReidIn the spiritual battle we face, we are called to put on the whole armor of God to stand against the schemes, pits, traps, snares, and ambushes of the devil. As Ephesians 6:11 instructs, we must equip ourselves fully to withstand his wiles. Ephesians 6:13-14 further urges us to take up this armor so that we may withstand in the evil day, standing firm with our waist girded with truth and wearing the breastplate of righteousness. This truth, as revealed in God's Word, must be solidly with us at all times, for it is the only way of living that can bring us into the Kingdom of God. Additionally, Ephesians 6:15 calls us to have our feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, providing firm footing in truth without fighting or arguing. Ephesians 6:16 emphasizes taking the shield of faith, which enables us to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one, protecting us through trials and fears with the assurance that God will never leave us. Ephesians 6:17 instructs us to take the helmet of salvation, guarding the mind that thinks and hopes, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, guiding us in every aspect of life through study and prayer. This armor equips us to stand immovable against sin and steadfast in righteousness, facing the enemy with the strength and mind of God.

When the Trumpet Blows
Sermon by John O. ReidIn the context of biblical imagery and history, the sound of trumpets carries profound significance. For many, it evokes the longing to hear the trumpet that heralds the return of Jesus Christ, signaling the end of man's misguided rule influenced by satan, and the cessation of the pain inflicted on humanity. Biblically, in Israel's history, the trumpet often served as an immediate warning of imminent war, death, and destruction. It also recalls the intimidating blast that grew in intensity as the Ten Commandments were about to be given, and the commands in Numbers 10 where the sound of a trumpet directed the movement of tribes. Furthermore, there is a revealed insight among God's Family that a final trumpet will be blown, marking a critical moment of change and judgment, though the world remains unaware of the utter devastation that awaits until that sound is heard.
