An Abundance of Living Water

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

On the Last Great Day, a significant water ceremony took place in Jerusalem, reflecting deep symbolic meaning. During this festive occasion, a grand procession of priests and Levites, accompanied by the blaring of trumpets, wound down from the Temple area to the pool of Siloam, a distance of about 1,000 yards. Crowds thronged the streets, joining in the joyous atmosphere with cheering and following the procession as best they could. Upon reaching the pool, the priests drew water with a golden pitcher and returned to the Temple. There, in a ceremonial act, they poured the water upon the altar while the Levitical choir, and likely the people as well, sang Isaiah 12:3, "Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of Salvation." This was a grand production, with choruses and responses echoing among the participants, associating the water poured on the altar as an offering of thanksgiving to God for salvation. It was during this water ceremony on the Last Great Day that Jesus Christ stood up amidst thousands in the Temple precincts and proclaimed, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me, and drink." He further declared, "He who believes in Me, as the scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water!'" With this, He contrasted the small amount of water in the golden pitcher with the vast abundance He offered, emphasizing that what He provided was far greater than the ceremonial act being performed. This moment highlighted the profound significance of the living water He promised, available to all who would believe in Him.
