Does Doctrine Really Matter? (Part One)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughChristians who claim to follow Jesus Christ yet engage in wars and fightings demonstrate carnality because such division flows from the ruler of this world rather than from God. Someone in the fellowship who claims to love God while hating a brother is carnal, ignorant about love for God, or lying, since the love of God produces biblical peace. Carnal Christians feel free to pursue their own course of belief and action because they no longer view God as their guide. Born again Christians who embrace teachings of tolerance and inclusion, believe all religions are essentially the same, hold that good works enable entry to heaven, or deny that Jesus rose from the dead exhibit carnality by creating their own religion and rejecting the word of God. These individuals pick and choose doctrines while feeling liberty to change what God has taught, resulting in attitudes and conduct that produce confusion and warfare instead of peace. Such carnality shows that their connection to God is not as strong as needed and that they follow the pattern established by Adam and Eve in rejecting divine instruction.
