Why Things Won't Change

Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Change is not produced by human efforts to overthrow existing authorities and replace them with new rulers, because the carnal nature motivating the change remains unaltered and therefore produces the same unjust and violent results. This principle is illustrated by the French Revolution, in which the oppressed masses, driven by lust for relief from elite oppression, violently seized power only to become equally tyrannical and inept once in authority. The same underlying drive appears in contemporary events such as Black Friday shopping frenzies and the Occupy movement, where participants sacrifice comfort, risk injury, and resort to violence in pursuit of personal desires or perceived entitlements, yet accomplish no lasting alteration in the surrounding culture. Because whatever a person sows is reaped, repeated attempts at reform through the same unregenerate nature merely repeat the failures of the past. God therefore does not employ revolution or mass protest as the means of change. Instead, He is using the long passage of time to prepare a people who will govern under Jesus Christ at His return. These individuals will possess the spirit of a sound mind and will no longer be driven by lust, revenge, or entitlement. Their motivation will be the glorification of God first and love for neighbor second, enabling them to institute rule and policy that succeed where all previous human systems have failed.
