Servant of God, Act II: God's Gift of Faith

Article by Charles Whitaker

Ebed-Melech's story illustrates that faith is a divine gift, not a product of natural inheritance or lineage. Faith does not emerge through genetic processes, nor is it encoded in human DNA to be passed to offspring. Instead, it is granted by God, who shows no partiality in bestowing this gift, making it available to all, including Gentiles like Ebed-Melech. His trust in God, in contrast to Zedekiah's lack of belief, demonstrates that faith, as a gift from Him, determines spiritual salvation. God selectively imparts the ability to believe, as seen in Ebed-Melech's deliverance, while Zedekiah perishes due to the absence of this divine increase in faith. This disparity underscores that God reserves the prerogative to grant faith and mercy as it pleases Him, shaping the destinies of individuals regardless of their social or national standing.

Living by Faith: God's Grace (Part Three)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Faith, as a gift from God, is intricately tied to the broader concept of grace, which embodies His unmerited benevolence toward sinners. Salvation occurs through what God freely gives, and faith itself is a fruit of the grace He bestows without obligation or constraint. Without the gift of grace, we would never possess godly faith, for it is God who initiates this process by drawing individuals to Himself. As Jesus declared, no one can come to Him unless the Father draws them, an act of grace that is undeserved and unearned, based solely on His divine purpose and design. This calling, this election, is an outright spiritual gift, placing a person's mind in a position to truly believe in Jesus Christ as God desires. Faith, therefore, is not of ourselves but is the result of God's gracious action, empowering us to trust in our Savior. Every spiritual gift, including faith, is given by Him, not innate to human nature, and serves to enable us to live a new life in Christ, glorifying Him and serving His body. We must humbly recognize that we are what we are because He made it possible, acknowledging that all we have is received from Him as a gift of His boundless love and kindness.

Living By Faith and God's Grace

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

Grace is the key element in God's entire purpose for our salvation, and without it, there would be no calling, no justification, no Holy Spirit given, and no sanctification, let alone salvation. In relation to salvation, our calling and election by God preceded even the slightest fragment of saving knowledge of Him, and thus our having faith in Him. We could not possibly earn any grace of God, as it is a gift freely given. Both grace and faith are gifts from God, ensuring that salvation is not conditioned by our works but is entirely His doing. Through His grace, we receive the power to live a righteous life pleasing to Him, a power not naturally within us as humans. This continuous flow of grace supplies us with blessings, gifts, favor, powers, forgiveness, knowledge, understanding, wisdom, healings, protection, and more, meeting our every spiritual need as His creation moves toward His purpose. God does not owe us any of this, yet He freely provides it for His glorification and to fulfill His plan of creating us for a place in His Kingdom.

God's Kingdom in the Parables (Part Three): Hidden Treasure

'Prophecy Watch' by David C. Grabbe

Faith, as a precious gift from God, stands as a central treasure in the realm of His Kingdom. In the Parable of the Hidden Treasure, Jesus Christ, represented by the noble man, hides something of immense value for a beneficial purpose, countering the destructive leaven hidden by the woman in the paired parable. This treasure, unlike the corrupting leaven that led the physical nation astray, embodies a collection of powerful, positive elements essential for living God's way of life: understanding, wisdom, the fear of the Lord, knowledge of God, and God's Word. These are hidden until He reveals them, underscoring that true faith is something only He can bestow. This faith, described as more precious than gold, is what Christ values deeply. He cherishes the trust that relies on Him to heal spiritual blindness, to cleanse beyond physical restoration, and to grant eternal life. He esteems the belief in His sovereign authority, where His command prompts immediate obedience. This faith is so significant to Him that He sacrificed everything to purchase the world, ensuring that those possessing this treasure become part of His spiritual realm. It forms the foundation of the Kingdom, given to a nation bearing its fruits, highlighting its role as a divine gift essential to God's reign.

A Survey of God's Gifts to Us

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

In sharp contrast to worldly views of giftedness, all human beings receive gifts from God. Everyone is gifted, as Paul mentioned while giving advice on marriage. Some gifts given by God are physically oriented, reflecting natural tendencies or abilities bestowed through the spirit in man. Others, given only within the church, are spiritual gifts imparted through the Holy Spirit. These spiritual gifts do not conflict with natural gifts and may even build upon them, though they should not be confused with each other. All gifts belong to God and should be used for His glory, which is the purpose of spiritual gifts. Spiritual gifts are extraordinary endowments given to members of God's church for the benefit of the whole church. They are bestowed by the grace of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul emphasizes that every man has his proper gift from God, highlighting that each individual receives at least one spiritual gift, and often more, according to personal capacities and the needs of the church. Depending on the need, the Spirit infuses entirely new powers or stimulates existing ones to a higher level of activity. Among these spiritual gifts, the gift of faith stands out as a powerful endowment. It is more than ordinary faith, producing miraculous results beyond normal belief. This gift of faith is a passionate commitment and belief that God is supreme and reliable, leading individuals to dedicate their whole being to His use. Though all have access to faith, few attain it at the level of the faithful described in scripture. God endows people with this extraordinary faith to rise to specific occasions or needs, granting a higher measure by which special deeds are accomplished. The primary purpose of spiritual gifts, including the gift of faith, is the edification and unity of the whole church, with a secondary purpose of conviction and conversion of future prospective members. These gifts are essential tools for the Body of Christ, designed not for individual glory but for the good of everyone. God distributes them as He wills, ensuring they are available when needed, ready to be given for the church's benefit.
