Jesus' Pre-Existence

Sermon/Bible Study by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In the accounts of Matthew 13:53-57, when Jesus Christ had finished His parables and returned to His own country, He taught in their synagogue, astonishing the people. They questioned the source of His wisdom and mighty works, recognizing Him as the carpenter's son, with a mother named Mary and known siblings. Yet, they were offended at Him, unable to accept His authority. Revelation 3:14 reveals Jesus Christ as the speaker, naming Himself the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, and the Beginning of the creation of God. This phrase, correctly understood as the Beginner or Author of God's creation, derives from the Greek word archee, indicating an originating instrument or active cause. Colossians 1:15-17 further clarifies that He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation, through whom all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. All things were created through Him and for Him, and in Him all things consist. Ephesians 3:9 states that God created all things through Jesus Christ, while Hebrews 1:2 affirms that God made the worlds through His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things. Hebrews 7:1-3 describes Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of the Most High God, as without father, mother, or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, made like the Son of God. This portrayal points to Jesus Christ as the eternal King of righteousness and peace, who interacted with Abraham. John 1:1-4 and 14 declare that in the beginning was the Word, who was with God and was God, through whom all things were made. The Word, identified as Jesus Christ, became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth. Revelation 19:11-13 and 16 depict Him as Faithful and True, clothed in a robe dipped in blood, named the Word of God, and bearing the title King of Kings and Lord of Lords. In Revelation 1:8, He proclaims Himself as the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, who is, was, and is to come, the Almighty. Revelation 1:18 further asserts that He lives, was dead, and is alive forevermore, holding the keys of Hades and Death. John 1:18 notes that no one has seen God at any time, except the only begotten Son, who has declared Him, indicating His unique relationship with the Father from eternity past. John 3:12-13 and 31-32 emphasize that He who came down from heaven is above all, testifying to what He has seen and heard. Luke 10:18 records Jesus stating that He saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven, revealing His presence and authority during that event, and encouraging His disciples with the vast power at their disposal. John 6:45-46 confirms from His own lips that He has seen the Father, a claim possible only in His preexistent state. John 8:52-58 recounts His declaration to the Jews that before Abraham was, He is, identifying Himself as the I AM, leading to their attempt to stone Him for blasphemy. John 8:23, 13:19, and 18:4-6 further assert His divine origin and identity as the I AM, with power that caused those arresting Him to fall back. In John 10:29-30, He states that He and His Father are one, affirming Their unity and prompting another attempt to stone Him. Matthew 23:37 expresses His longing to gather Jerusalem's children as a hen gathers her chicks, reflecting His historical involvement with Israel as their God who guided them through centuries. I Corinthians 10:1-4 identifies Him as the spiritual Rock that followed the Israelites in the wilderness, the same Being who became their Savior. Finally, Revelation 22:13 and 16 conclude with His self-identification as the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Root and Offspring of David, and the Bright and Morning Star, affirming His eternal existence and divine authority.

The God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses

The identical actions of the Lord and the Angel of the Lord show they are the same Being. The God known by Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses was Jesus Christ.

God's Non-Transmittable Attributes (Part One): Omnipotence

Bible Study by Martin G. Collins

Among God's many attributes are those that He cannot pass on to others because they define Him. God's attribute of omnipotence defines His power over all.
