Stephen and the New Deal

Article by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In the dynamic narrative of the early church's growth, Stephen, a mere deacon ordained to serve tables, stands out with seven percent of the book of Acts devoted to his story. After beginning to preach and perform marvelous wonders, his enemies incited the people against him, leading to his seizure and trial before the Sanhedrin. Given the chance to reply to false charges of blasphemy against the Temple and the law, Stephen boldly recounted Israel's history of rejecting God and His prophets, culminating in a fierce accusation against the Sanhedrin for their disobedience and the murder of the Messiah. His piercing words provoked murderous vengeance, resulting in his martyrdom by stoning. As he faced death, Stephen declared, "Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!" This vision underscored the significance of his sacrifice, marking him as the first after Jesus Christ to give his life for the faith. Stephen's unwavering stand, empowered by God's Spirit, proved that a human, other than Jesus Christ, could fully yield to God, even unto death, fulfilling the ultimate deal of the New Covenant with a shining witness of complete surrender.
