Freedom's Dark Underbelly

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Jesus Christ teaches that continuing in His word makes one His disciple and leads to knowing the truth. This knowledge of the truth produces freedom. True freedom rests on a relationship with truth or obedience to the truth. The Son makes one free through this relationship with Him. Love for the Son prompts obedience to what He teaches as the proper response and worship. This obedience provides the guideline and standard within which informed choices can be made. Such choices lead toward the best ends, including the Kingdom of God and eternal life. Freedom is closeness to God and being brought to Him. Growing in true liberty means growing in closeness or likeness to God. A person close to God is truly free. This relationship allows God to direct right choices and decisions that produce the best results. Freedom therefore includes the ability to choose but must be accompanied by the standard of God's law and the principles of His word. Living within the bounds of God's way of life in the relationship He has made yields true freedom.

Growing Into Liberty

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Freedom is not an immediate state achieved by mere liberation from bondage, as seen in the historical context of American slaves and the spiritual journey of Israel. Even after the Emancipation Proclamation, former slaves were not truly free to compete on equal footing due to lingering mental and societal shackles. Similarly, Israel, though physically freed from Egypt, remained enslaved by a heart and mind bound by disbelief and sin, preventing them from entering God's rest. As Hebrews 3:19 states, they could not enter due to unbelief, showing a direct connection between disbelief and sin. Jesus Christ teaches in John 8:31-32 that true freedom comes from abiding in His word, emphasizing a commitment to living by His teachings. Without this devotion, belief remains superficial and does not lead to genuine liberty. True freedom requires understanding and applying God's word, a process that transforms the heart and mind. Liberty is a function of God's Spirit, as II Corinthians 3:17 declares, where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. This spiritual freedom is not instantaneous but a gradual growth, enabled by God's Spirit, which helps unshackle the mind from carnal, Egyptian-trained thinking. Romans 8:2-4 highlights that the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus frees us from the law of sin and death, aiming for the righteous requirements of the law to be fulfilled in us as we walk according to the Spirit. The journey to freedom is hindered by fears and insecurities, often tied to an excessive consciousness of self and a distorted perception of time. Hebrews 2:14-15 notes that Christ came to release those held in bondage by the fear of death, representing all fears that constrict life. Israel's repeated return to Egyptian thinking under pressure, as seen in Exodus 14:9-12 and Isaiah 30:1-4, illustrates how fear and impatience can drive one back into bondage, even after liberation. Ultimately, freedom is a process of growth in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, requiring perseverance through trials to build character and hope, as Romans 5:3-5 explains. Perfect love, which casts out fear, is the key to true liberty, for fear destroys love and keeps one enslaved to self-concern. As I John 4:18 states, perfect love casts out fear, enabling a person to focus on serving others rather than sinning through self-focus. Thus, liberty must be grown into, supported by God's faithful promise that His word will accomplish its purpose, as Isaiah 55:10-11 assures.
