Searching for Israel (Part Four): The Kingdom and the Key
Article by Charles WhitakerIn the early days of Israel, God ruled directly through a theocracy administered by human agents such as Moses, Joshua, and the judges, none of whom established a capital city because the government's seat remained in heaven. When the people demanded a king like the surrounding nations, the nation shifted to a monarchy. Saul's leadership failed, and God replaced him with David of Judah, who took two decisive steps that shaped the future of his dynasty. He established Jerusalem as the capital and proposed building a temple for the ark. Although God refused to allow David to construct the temple because he had shed much blood, He responded with an unconditional promise recorded in II Samuel 7: the Lord would build David a house, establish his seed after him, and set up his throne and kingdom forever. This promise extended David's authority over the entire house of Israel, not merely the tribe of Judah, and was later reaffirmed by Jeremiah, who declared that David would never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel. The same eternal rule had been anticipated centuries earlier when Jacob declared that the scepter would not depart from Judah. God's promise to David concerned royal authority, while the birthright of wealth and national expansion belonged to Joseph's descendants, Ephraim and Manasseh; the two blessings are therefore distinct. David and Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord, a fact recognized even by the Queen of Sheba. This throne belongs ultimately to Christ, the Son of David, who will return to rule over all the earth from it, fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy that the government will rest on His shoulder and increase forever upon the throne of David. The knowledge of this everlasting dynasty, its rule over Israel, and its future inheritance by Christ constitutes the key of the house of David and supplies a vital marker for locating the descendants of Israel among the nations.
Jesus Disqualified?
'Ready Answer' by Richard T. RitenbaughThe promise of an enduring dynasty traces back to God's covenant with David that his house and throne would be established forever before him. This right to rule over Israel passes through his descendants without restriction to any single line such as Solomon's. One genealogy presents the legal claim through Joseph, whose ancestry includes Jeconiah yet remains untainted by the curse on that king because Jesus was not Joseph's biological son. The second genealogy presents the natural descent through Mary and traces to Nathan, another son of David, thereby supplying an independent line of inheritance to the same throne. Together the two records confirm that Jesus possesses both the legal title and the biological connection required to inherit David's dynasty. This dual validation forms part of a larger set of proofs that establish Jesus as the promised Messiah who fulfills the perpetual covenant and will occupy the throne over Israel forever.
Born of a Woman
'Prophecy Watch' by Richard T. RitenbaughGod narrows the lineage of the Messiah further by selecting the line of David to produce the King of kings. Jeremiah prophesies that the Lord will raise to David a Branch of righteousness who shall reign and prosper while executing judgment and righteousness in the earth. Both of Jesus' human parents descend from David, a fact widely acknowledged during His ministry, and Gabriel announces before His conception that the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. Paul reminds Timothy that Jesus, the seed of David, was raised from the dead, adding that if believers die and endure with Him they will also live and reign with Him. This Davidic descent ties directly to the house of David through the prophecy of Micah that the ruler in Israel will come from Bethlehem, cementing His claim to the everlasting throne. The same sign points to Christ as the bread of life through whom eternal life is received. Because every detail of these prophecies has been fulfilled exactly, the dozens of remaining prophecies concerning His second coming as King of kings and Lord of lords to judge the earth and establish His Kingdom will likewise occur just as He has said.
