Jesus Disqualified?
'Ready Answer' by Richard T. RitenbaughThe argument concerning the Davidic lineage of Jesus centers on the promise that David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, as stated in Jeremiah 33:17. This promise does not specify that David's heirs, particularly the Messiah, must trace their roots through Solomon. Therefore, the genealogy in Luke 3, likely representing Jesus' biological lineage through Mary, holds as valid a claim to David's throne as the one in Matthew 1. In fact, it strengthens His claim, as He can trace His lineage to David through two separate lines. Luke's genealogy, aimed at a Gentile audience, emphasizes Jesus' humanity by tracing His descent back to Adam, showing His universality to every man through Mary, His link to humanity. Though Luke 3:23 mentions Joseph as of Heli, it does not imply direct descent but rather a legal or marital connection, possibly as the son-in-law of Heli. From Heli, the line traces back to Nathan, another son of David, and there is no stigma or disqualification in Solomon's name being absent from this list. In messianic terms, David's name remains the vital one for establishing Jesus' lineage.
Was Jesus a Jew (Matthew 1:1-16)?
Bible Questions & AnswersJesus, as a descendant of Judah, belongs to the Davidic, kingly line of this tribe. Both His mother Mary and His stepfather Joseph are listed in the New Testament genealogies as descendants of Judah through the line of David. Several verses refer to Him as the Son of David, and one of the twenty-four elders in Revelation calls Him the Lion of the tribe of Judah. God inspired the apostle Paul to affirm that our Lord arose from Judah. Long before His birth, it was prophesied that the Messiah, the Prince of Peace, would come from the tribe of Judah. In His conversation with the woman at the well, Jesus includes Himself among the Jews, stating that salvation is of the Jews. Despite this, His own people rejected Him when He came to them. Jesus was born as a human being into the nation, area, and family of Judah through a divine begettal, taking on the flesh and blood of His physical parent Mary.
The Birth of Jesus Christ (Part One): Annunciation
'Prophecy Watch' by Richard T. RitenbaughThe accounts of Jesus' birth in the Gospels reveal significant details about His Davidic lineage, underscoring the divine orchestration in His coming. Mary, an ordinary Jewess of the line of David, was specially prepared by God to bear His Son, receiving favor not due to her own qualifications but through God's graciousness. Joseph, also of the Davidic line, through whom Jesus would physically claim David's throne, demonstrated humility and obedience in accepting the divine plan. Though the angel did not mention to Joseph that Jesus would be King, the connection to David's lineage remained a vital aspect of His identity. God, in His sovereignty, prepared this perfect couple to raise His Son, highlighting their submission to His will despite the disruption to their personal plans.
