The Beast and Babylon (Part One)
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughThe Beast of Revelation, as described in Revelation 13:1-8, emerges as a formidable entity with a direct connection to the Dragon, identified as satan in Revelation 12:9. This relationship is evident through the shared imagery of seven heads and ten horns, though differences exist in the number and placement of crowns—seven on the Dragon's heads and ten on the Beast's horns. The Beast receives its power from the Dragon, as noted in Revelation 13:4, which portrays it as an awesome, war-making power, prompting the exclamation, "Who is able to make war with the Beast?" This Beast aligns with the fourth beast of Daniel 7 and the legs of iron in Daniel 2, representing the Roman Empire, its revivals, and its end-time configuration. The ten horns symbolize ten kings who will be part of the Beast at the return of Jesus Christ, forming a powerful combination poised for that great day. However, contrary to expectations, Europe, often anticipated as the Beast's origin, is not uniting into the colossus foreseen, appearing disunited and weakened politically, economically, and militarily. This raises questions about the perspective from which the signs of the Beast's rise are being observed, suggesting the possibility of missing crucial developments due to an incorrect point of view.
The Beast's Militarism
'Prophecy Watch' by Richard T. RitenbaughScattered within its pages, the Bible provides signs and clues about the person known as the Beast, who will dominate the world scene during the last several years before Christ's return. The Bible gives neither a name nor vital statistics for this figure, and even his racial or national origins remain unclear, though Scripture calls him the King of the North, a title last held by Rome. What Scripture offers is a collection of prophesied behaviors, characteristics, and clues to his motivations and temperament through various historical types. Assembling this evidence about the coming, enigmatic figure carries the suspense of a mystery. One of the paramount biblical keys to this man of unbridled ambition is that he will be fundamentally militaristic, a formidable and almost invincible general and conqueror. Scripture verifies that martial zeal and prowess are among the foremost characteristics of all those who have been types of the Beast. The Beast is obsessed with war, a proud man who thrives on military victories, the adulation and riches they bring, and who delights in utterly destroying his enemies and imposing his will upon the conquered. He is not necessarily a politician, though adept at political manipulation, but a man who loves war, urging swiftness, decisiveness, and overwhelming force. Like many past types of the Beast, he will enforce his own terms, likely harsh ones, on those he subdues.
The Beast and Religion
Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)When God declares that satan has deceived the entire world, He means precisely that—the whole world, not merely its religious facet. Satan, named Abaddon and Apollyon, a destroyer, employs his invisible hierarchy of demons to thwart God's purpose. Though he will ultimately fail, he will cause immense misery along the way. Like a government with various departments, satan operates with organized deceit to systematically undermine God's plan. Religion, however, holds the greatest significance to God's purpose and mankind's quality of life, being the primary area God directly warns about in end-time prophecies due to its profound impact on His plan. Revelation 13:11-15 describes a personality who persuades people to loyally support the beast, appearing like a lamb but speaking as a dragon. The first beast, rising from the sea as depicted in Revelation 13:2, receives power from the dragon. A second beast, emerging from the earth in Revelation 13:11, is also likely empowered by the dragon, performing great signs in the presence of the first beast. Together with the dragon, they form a sinister trinity. Revelation 16:13 identifies this second beast as the false prophet, unmistakably a religious figure, highlighting the necessity of a religious component in the formation of a deceptive one-world government to capture the hearts and minds of people. II Thessalonians 2:9 indicates that the coming of the lawless one, understood as the first beast of Revelation 13, aligns with satan's influence, accompanied by power, signs, and lying wonders. Both beasts serve as tools of the invisible and powerful satan, who manipulates them through his abilities. While it remains unclear if the first beast performs miracles, Revelation 13:11-18 confirms that the false prophet, the second beast, undeniably performs miraculous acts to deceive onlookers and bolster support for the first beast. These real miracles mask satan's true intent, forming the core of the deception that could sway countless individuals to align with the beast and the false prophet. The persuasive actions of the false prophet, set against global political, economic, and social circumstances, will strongly influence choices about life direction.
The Mark of the Beast
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughIn the book of Revelation, the Beast emerges as a formidable power, both political and military, rising from the sea as described in Revelation 13:1. This entity, later identified with a singular human figure, wields authority for forty-two months, speaking blasphemies against God, His name, His tabernacle, and those in heaven, as seen in Revelation 13:4-6. The Beast's influence is magnified by another beast from the earth, possessing two horns like a lamb but speaking like a dragon, who supports the first Beast by enforcing worship and performing deceptive signs, even making fire descend from heaven, according to Revelation 13:11-14. This second beast, a religious leader, compels the creation of an image to the first Beast, granting it breath to speak and ordering death to those who refuse worship, as noted in Revelation 13:15. Furthermore, this figure imposes the mark of the Beast on all—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—on their right hand or forehead, ensuring that no one can buy or sell without it, as detailed in Revelation 13:16-17. The mark, linked to the Beast's name or number, signifies ownership, devotion, and loyalty, metaphorically tied to belief and practice, impacting economic and social life dramatically. The mark of the Beast reaches its peak during the tribulation, part of the fifth seal's events, intensifying gradually over time, as suggested by the historical pattern of the seals in Revelation 6:9-11. Resistance to the mark results in martyrdom, orchestrated by the false prophet, the second beast, who causes persecution of the church for refusing to accept it. Those who accept the mark face God's wrath through the seven last plagues, described as horrific in Revelation 16:1-2, while those who reject it suffer death at the hands of the Beast but are promised a place in the Kingdom of God, as seen in Revelation 20:4. The mark, identified as a charagma in Greek, historically denotes a brand, tattoo, seal, or certification, each indicating ownership or allegiance, often tied to worship or societal acceptance, making it universally popular due to the desire to live and sustain oneself economically. Its enforcement by the false church, in collaboration with the political power of the Beast, historically rooted in pagan Rome, underscores its deceptive nature, leading to the persecution and martyrdom of saints who uphold God's commandments, as evidenced in Revelation 17:6 and Revelation 12:17. Those victorious over the Beast, his image, and his mark stand in triumph, singing praises to God, paralleling Israel's deliverance from Pharaoh, as depicted in Revelation 15:2-3.
