The Beast and Religion

Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

In the unfolding of end-time events, a second beast emerges from the earth, distinct from the first beast who rises from the sea. This second beast, as described in Revelation 13:11-15, possesses the appearance of a lamb but speaks like a dragon, revealing a deceptive nature. Identified in Revelation 16:13 as the false prophet, this figure is undeniably a religious personality, integral to the schemes of deception orchestrated by satan. Likely empowered by the dragon, much like the first beast, the second beast performs great signs in the presence of the first, using these miracles to mislead onlookers and garner support for the first beast. These miraculous acts, though real, are crafted with the intent to conceal satan's true destructive purpose. Within the global context of political, economic, and social turmoil, the actions of the second beast, the false prophet, will be profoundly persuasive, compelling many to align with the beast through witnessed signs and lying wonders spread worldwide via modern media.

The Beast From the Earth and 666

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In Revelation 13:11-18, a second beast emerges from the earth, distinct yet similar in nature to the first beast that rises from the sea. This second beast, often linked with the False Prophet, shares characteristics with the first, displaying a cunning ferocity and savagery akin to wild animals. Its origin from the earth suggests a foundation of stability and endurance, contrasting with the volatile, shifting nature of the sea from which the first beast arises. This stability points to a religious entity, one that has remained fundamentally unchanged through generations, fulfilling humanity's need for continuity amidst changing governments. This second beast possesses two horns like a lamb, symbolizing both ecclesiastical and temporal power, yet it speaks like a dragon, revealing a deceptive, Satanic core beneath a benign or even Christ-like façade. It exercises authority as a representative of the first beast, compelling the earth and all its inhabitants to worship the first beast. This universal influence is achieved through organized religion backed by state power, demonstrating its dual authority. The second beast performs great signs, including making fire come down from heaven, a deceptive miracle designed to turn people to worship the wrong god. These signs, though real, originate from a source of deception, leading observers to believe they come from divine power when they are actually from satanic influence. Additionally, it animates an image of the first beast, granting it the ability to communicate and exert authority over life and death, potentially spreading doctrine and punishing dissenters. Crucially, the second beast causes all—rich and poor, small and great, free and slave—to give themselves a mark on their right hand or forehead. This mark, not a physical brand or tattoo, is a spiritual sign of identity, loyalty, and ownership, reflected in one's actions and thoughts. It is not forcibly imposed but voluntarily accepted, rendering those who take it complicit in their choice. Without this mark, individuals cannot buy or sell, facing social and economic marginalization, persecution, or death for refusing to align with the beast's teachings. The number associated with this mark, 666, is presented as a human number, symbolizing ultimate imperfection apart from God. It identifies a system and ruler embodying humanism and opposition to divine will, marking the pinnacle of what humanity can achieve without God. This number, along with the mark and name, signifies worship of the beast, whether for political, religious, or economic reasons, placing those who accept it under divine judgment. Those who resist must rely on God for sustenance, standing firm in their faith amidst repression.

The Whole Earth

Trends in Global Religion

'Prophecy Watch' by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The world is not very unified religiously, is it? What does this mean for the fulfillment of Bible prophecy? Could this mean we still have a long time to wait?
