The Miracles of Jesus Christ: Healing Blind Bartimaeus
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsIn the healing of blind Bartimaeus, as He journeyed to Jerusalem for the last time, Jesus Christ, addressed as O Lord, Son of David, was recognized by Bartimaeus with a cry for mercy. This title, Son of David, was a well-known designation of the expected Prophet and Promised One, at whose coming the eyes of the blind would be opened. Despite the pressure of the suffering He was about to endure, Jesus' compassion motivated Him to tend to the needy. When Bartimaeus responded to His question, he addressed Jesus respectfully as Lord, and in one account as Rabboni, meaning My great master, a term of high respect. Their earnest request, Lord, that our eyes may be opened, demonstrated their need and desire for Christ to fulfill it, prompting His compassionate response.
Jesus Disqualified?
'Ready Answer' by Richard T. RitenbaughThe argument surrounding Jesus Christ, Son of David, centers on His lineage and claim to David's throne. The promise in Jeremiah 33:17 states that David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, yet it does not specify that David's heirs, especially the Messiah, must trace their roots through Solomon. Therefore, the genealogy in Luke 3, likely Jesus' biological lineage through Mary, is just as valid a claim to David's throne as the one in Matthew 1. In fact, it strengthens His claim, as He can trace His lineage to David through two separate lines. Luke's genealogy, written primarily for Gentiles, emphasizes Jesus' humanity by tracing His natural, biological family tree back to Adam, showing He shares humanness with all people. This lineage, potentially through Mary, highlights His universality as the Messiah for both Jews and Gentiles. Despite debates over specific terms in Luke 3:23, such as Joseph being of Heli, the vital name in messianic terms remains David, not Solomon, and there is no stigma or disqualification in Solomon's absence from the list. While Jesus' lineage is important in verifying His Messiahship, it plays only a small part compared to other significant proofs of His identity as the Christ.
