Are You Subject to Perpetual Bondage?

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

In the journey of spiritual transformation, we recognize that every person is subject to slavery, either to sin or to God. The world, under the influence of satan, ensnares all in a tyrannical system, as foretold in Revelation 13:16-17, where the Beast power enforces complete physical subjection through a mark, controlling even the ability to buy or sell. Nobody on earth is truly free from this satanic Babylonian bondage in a physical sense. Yet, the critical shift is not merely from slavery to freedom, but from slavery to sin to slavery to God, moving from darkness to light, from falsehood to truth. The Bible assumes universal service on earth, presenting the choice of master as either God or sin. Romans 6:15-22 illustrates this dichotomy, urging us to present ourselves as slaves to righteousness for holiness, having been set free from sin to become slaves of God, bearing fruit to everlasting life. The world, however, remains in bondage to corruption, with unredeemed sinners enslaved to evil powers and lusts, as II Peter 2:19 warns of false promises of liberty that only deepen corruption. Jesus Christ exemplifies voluntary slavery, humbling Himself to death and teaching that true greatness lies in humble service, as seen in His parables in Luke 17:7-10, where a servant's duty is expected without thanks. His death serves as the redemptive payment, delivering many from the slave market of sin, showing that freedom is not autonomous perfection but a chosen relationship with God, requiring obedient rejection of sin's control. Thus, we are called to resist the influence of the world and satan, striving to remain slaves to God, embracing His easy yoke and light burden as described in Matthew 11:28-30.
