General Revelation
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughRevelation from God, coupled with His Spirit, must take precedence over human reason, scholarship, logic, and research. Divine revelation, as contained in the Bible, is the primary source of God's truth, given through His word and recorded for our understanding. This general revelation in Scripture encompasses all that is necessary for salvation, God's plan, and our roles within it. If a matter is not addressed in the Bible, it likely bears no direct relevance to our calling or future in the Kingdom of God. The Bible stands as the ultimate authority, surpassing all other sources of information, including church publications, commentaries, concordances, lexicons, and traditions such as the Talmud or Mishna. It holds greater weight than opinions from sages, rabbis, priests, or historians, and remains the final arbiter on matters of true Christian doctrine and practice. God's word, as revealed to the prophets and apostles, forms the foundation upon which our understanding is built, with Jesus Christ Himself as the chief cornerstone unifying all revelation. This revelation, now complete within the canon of Scripture, is no longer ongoing. The Bible contains all the truth we need, and any claim of new revelation outside its pages must be rejected if it does not align with what is already written. Through the inspiration of God, the prophets and apostles recorded His truth, which we access and comprehend with the aid of His Spirit, requiring only a reasoning mind to grasp His teachings.
