Satan, a wily and powerful adversary, stalks people like a roaring lion, invisible and soundless yet more intelligent and clever, seeking to devour the vulnerable by mauling them after pinning them down and wounding them. His pride originated in misjudging his beauty and splendor, corrupting his wisdom and leading him to oppose God, resulting in being cast down. As ruler of this world and prince of the power of the air, he spreads demonic wisdom that produces confusion and evil, stirs conflict through selfish ambition, and speaks lies to undermine confidence and lead into sin and carnality. His massive ego drives repeated attacks from new angles.

Why Must Satan Be Released?

Sermonette by David C. Grabbe

Satan refuses to repent, even after suffering 1,000 years of confinement. Upon his release, Satan expertly manipulates the pulls of carnal nature.

Stalked by Satan

'Ready Answer' by Mike Ford

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. The great deceiver often works under cover of darkness, patiently stalking his prey, invisible to them. His senses are much sharper than ours, and he sees us when we do not even know he's there, always stalking us. Lifted up in their pride, he and his demons dared to hunt God's throne but were soundly routed. Now, as our adversaries, they hunt God's people, trying to pick off the weak, the ailing, and those who have grown weary and dropped back from the herd. Once he attacks, he causes great pain but does not go immediately for the kill; he pins us down and wounds us first. Think of him as a lion, quietly and invisibly stalking you, always looking for a way to maneuver you into a position by yourself where he can leap out of nowhere to maul you.

Satan (Part 5)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Satan originates and spreads demonic wisdom that is earthly, sensual, and produces confusion, disorder, disharmony, instability, and evil things. Satan undergirds selfish ambition, bitter envy, and self-seeking within Christian congregations, judging by worldly standards to make personal gain the highest goal. Satan stirs conflict by taking advantage of human desires that run head-on into one another, leading people to act on unlawful desires and satisfy themselves according to the world's values. Satan is the ruler of this world and the spirit of the world works through him to produce confusion, division, and war. Satan is a wily and powerful adversary described as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour, stalking people who are vulnerable because he is invisible and soundless yet more intelligent, clever, and powerful than they are. Satan aims to undermine confidence, sow discord, and push people to stop believing and revert to carnality. Satan tries to lead into self-indulgence by turning God-given feelings such as anger into a toehold for sin when they are nursed for the wrong reason. Satan has a massive ego and arrogant attitude that leads him to attack repeatedly over and over from new angles, including strengths as well as weaknesses, and even personally. Satan is the wicked one who takes advantage of fear to remove the fear of God and manipulates through cynicism such as the principle that a man will do anything to save his skin. Satan speaks lies as naturally and spontaneously as God speaks the truth. Satan insinuates thoughts that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God, giving rise to desire and then to action, and twists even true statements with a perverse angle to lead into sin.

Pride, Contention, and Unity

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

Satan's pride originated in his judgment of his own beauty and splendor. This attitude corrupted his wisdom and set him in motion against God. He possessed perfection, wisdom, and beauty yet misjudged his value. His pride brought him into open conflict with God and resulted in his being cast down to earth. He functions as the prince of the power of the air and as the spirit who works in the sons of disobedience. God titles him king over all the children of pride. Satan means Adversary because he opposes God and those under his own influence. Additional names given to him are Abaddon meaning Destruction and Apollyon meaning Destroyer. His pride produces only contention and yields no good fruit. This nature drives competition taken to the level of life and death among those he influences.

Living By Faith and Human Pride

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

God wants us to walk—live our lives—by faith, but our pride and vanity frequently get in the way. Critically, pride causes us to reject God and His Word.

Living by Faith: Human Pride

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Our human nature is pure vanity with a heart that is desperately deceitful and wicked, motivated by self-centeredness, a deadly combination for producing sin.

Motives

Sermonette by Joseph B. Baity

Our motives must be to serve God and our spiritual siblings rather than elevating ourselves. Are we trying to help or merely putting on a show?

Envy: The Most Precious Daughter

Sermonette by David C. Grabbe

It is easy to follow in Satan's footsteps, courting his daughter Envy, reaping the disquiet which accompanies her. Envy comes from pushing God from our thoughts.

Job: Things Left Unsaid

Sermon by David C. Grabbe

Even the accuser of the brethren made no accusations against Job, the first of several curious absences—things left unsaid—in the book of Job.

Being Alert to Our Enemy

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Like the cycles of the seasons, the events of prophecy follow natural progressions. God has given ample warnings to His prophets to prepare His people.

Conviction to Godly Righteousness

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Real repentance and conviction of righteousness should dramatically augment prayer, study, meditation, but most importantly, how we live our lives.

The Handwriting is on the Wall: Conspiracies

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Conspiracies by political actors have led to grasping at power. We must not worry about conspiracies, but instead align ourselves with God's Kingdom.

Ingratitude

Article by Mark Schindler

Some people cannot seem to realize a blessing if it slaps them across the face! Ingratitude can hold a person back in his or her relationship with God.

Presumptuousness

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Individuals arrogating to themselves the authority to change doctrine are on extremely dangerous ground, presumptuously setting up idols in place of God.

Anticipating the Enemy

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

We become vulnerable to Satan when we allow pride to consume us, cozy up to false doctrine, toy with the paranormal, or let down in prayer and Bible study

Faith (Part Seven)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Pride is a perverted comparison that elevates one above another. Because of its arrogant self-sufficiency, it hinders our faith. Faith depends on humility.
