The True Gospel (Part 6)

CGG Weekly by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel. It took only twenty years after the death and resurrection of Christ for the gospel to be perverted into something no longer recognized as good news. The true gospel, as preached by the apostles, comes through the revelation of Jesus Christ, not from human teaching, and can only be understood through supernatural disclosure. This message is not readily available to all, nor can one simply find it by reading Scripture without God opening the mind to receive it. In the first century, false gospels like legalism and Gnosticism challenged the true message, twisting salvation into works or peculiar ideas about knowledge and the nature of spirit and flesh. Today, a deceptive gospel about Christ focuses on the Messenger rather than the Message He brought, which is the way to the Kingdom of God. Christ Himself emphasized proclaiming the Kingdom, instructing His disciples to preach that the Kingdom of heaven is at hand, not to preach about Him personally. The true gospel remains the revelation of the imminent Kingdom of God, and any other message, even if preached by an angel, is to be rejected.

The True Gospel

Bible Study by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

A difference in teaching has occurred among various Christian churches, each holding its own understanding of what the true gospel is. Some label it the gospel of grace, others the gospel of salvation or the gospel of Christ, while some refer to it as the gospel of God or the gospel of the Kingdom. The only true gospel is the one presented in the Bible's pages, and it is vital to search it out. It matters greatly what gospel Christians believe, as a double curse is pronounced on anyone who preaches a gospel different from the one taught by the apostles, who were directly instructed by Christ Himself. Jesus preached the gospel of the Kingdom of God, proclaiming the good news that God's Kingdom would come and restore all things. This gospel explains not only that the Kingdom is coming but also how we can be a part of it. The conditions for entering God's Kingdom are to repent and believe in the gospel. Repentance involves a complete turning of the mind and way of life to follow God, while believing the gospel includes accepting Christ and the message He brought. Jesus spoke only what His Father in heaven told Him to speak, making the gospel of God, the gospel of Jesus, and the gospel of the Kingdom one and the same, originating from God and proclaimed by His Son. The gospel of grace is also part of the gospel of the Kingdom, as it encompasses God's offer of grace and salvation. The gospel of the Kingdom remains relevant today, preached not only by proclaiming that Jesus Christ will return to establish His government on earth but also by teaching both believers and unbelievers how to live God's way of life.

False Gospels

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Jesus Christ came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of the Kingdom of God, declaring that the time is fulfilled and the Kingdom is at hand, urging all to repent and believe in this gospel. This message, central to His teachings, focused on the Kingdom rather than on His person. However, within two decades after His ascension, by the early 50s AD, this gospel was perverted as some began preaching about the person of Christ instead of the Kingdom. This distortion persisted through the centuries, obscuring the true message until it was restored through Herbert W. Armstrong, who emphasized that the gospel of the Kingdom had not been preached to the world for over 19 centuries. During this long period of spiritual darkness, only a scattered remnant of the church held to the truth, yet it was part of God's plan to reserve the great works for the beginning and the end of the church's history. The restoration of the true gospel revealed God's plan for mankind, clarifying the purpose of both humanity and the church, now and at Christ's return to establish God's government on earth. In contrast, false gospels emerged, leading people astray from the truth. As early as the time of the Galatians, within a dozen years of hearing the true gospel, some turned to a different gospel, which was no gospel at all since it led to death rather than eternal life in God's Kingdom. Such perversions mix elements of truth with error, diluting the message and rendering it false, ultimately leading to destruction. The severity of preaching a different gospel is underscored by the warning that even if an angel from heaven should preach another gospel, let that being be accursed. The motivation behind false gospels often lies in seeking to please men rather than God, revealing a stark contrast to the true gospel, which originates not from human thought but through divine revelation from Jesus Christ. Thus, there remains only one true gospel, while many false gospels deceive and scatter, opposing the gathering work of Christ.
