The Truth About Deception (Part One)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

Jesus Christ, in His prophecy about the sign of His coming and the end of the age, warns of deception with grave concern. He declares that false christs and false prophets will arise, performing great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. This warning underscores the reality that deception is a potent threat, even to those chosen by God. Jesus Himself begins this prophecy by cautioning His followers to take heed that no one deceives them, emphasizing the need for vigilance. The apostles echo this urgent call to guard against deception. Paul instructs to note and avoid those who cause divisions and offenses, as they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting with smooth talk and flattering words. He warns against self-deception, cautioning not to think oneself wise by worldly standards or to believe that the unrighteous will inherit the Kingdom. Paul also advises against being misled by evil company, which corrupts good habits, and not to be deceived by empty words or persuasive philosophies that lead to empty deceit. Additionally, he urges not to let anyone deceive by any means and highlights the hardening effect of sin's deceitfulness. The adversary, known as the dragon, the devil, and satan, deceives the whole world, originating all lies and fostering destructive fruit wherever his spirit is present. This universal deception manifests in countless forms, shapes, and flavors, not limited to a single tactic or belief. Recognizing one form of deception does not grant immunity to others; it merely indicates that specific lie holds no sway at that moment. While awareness of satan's devices grows with spiritual sight granted by God, the danger of deception persists. The ability to discern good from evil begins to develop, yet the threat remains, requiring constant guard against the myriad ways deception can infiltrate.

The Truth About Deception (Part Three)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

Guarding against deception requires a clear understanding of where true strength lies. Trusting in human intellect, experience, or personal fortitude is a dangerous folly, for the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Relying on mere human abilities, whether our own or another's, leaves us vulnerable to the schemes of the adversary, who can exploit both our weaknesses and strengths with cunning and subtlety. We are outmatched and outgunned on our own, unable to anticipate all the methods of deception that may come against us. The only true defense against deception is to place our trust and hope in the LORD. Blessed is the one who trusts in Him, for God actively protects His own from the sway of the wicked one. Our strength comes not from ourselves but from Jesus Christ, and walking in relationship with Him allows us to adopt the character of the Father and the Son. The more we think and act as They do, the less likely we are to be ensnared by subtle traps or long deceptions. The Father and the Son have already defeated the adversary, and Their desire is to dwell with us if we love Them and keep Their words. Those who resist deception are those who make the Father and the Son the focus of their being, holding a deep love for the truth. Their security is not in personal strength but in the protection God provides to those who demonstrate a heartfelt desire to live with Him eternally, no matter the cost. Through frequent prayer, focused study of God's Word, and occasional fasting to humble themselves, they strengthen their resistance to lies. With their hope and trust firmly placed in God, they are blessed with the spiritual strength to overcome the father of lies.

Deceptions of the End Time

'Prophecy Watch' by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Human nature is incredibly self-deceptive, with hearts deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, often refusing to admit the possibility of being deceived. Deceit has become pervasive, with lying considered acceptable if it does not harm anyone or if it promotes a good cause, though such conditions are often illusions. Falsehoods, even those long past, can resurface and destroy reputations, as seen in the case of a businessman who resigned due to lies on his résumé. Jesus warned that an increase in lying and deceit would mark the end time, particularly through religious deception by those using His name to preach falsehoods. His instruction is clear: be vigilant not to be deceived. Through the apostle Paul, He teaches to test all things and hold fast to what is good, guarding the truth committed to one's trust and avoiding profane contradictions falsely called knowledge. Once the right and true is proved by faith and love of God, one must never be persuaded otherwise, relying on God's power to hold on. Dishonesty extends beyond religion, permeating all aspects of society, founded on the lie told by satan to Eve that she would not surely die. Research indicates the average person lies frequently, making deception a habitual and accepted practice. In various fields, such as finance and government, numbers and statistics are manipulated to mislead, hiding harsh realities behind seemingly positive reports. The medical field also distorts facts, with conflicting claims about health risks. With vast information available and numerous ways to manipulate it, men easily deceive millions, especially those who do not believe in the true source of knowledge, God and His Word. The rise of the lawless one will be accompanied by false signs and wonders, lies produced by satan to appear as if from God, using all unrighteous deception that may seem righteous to the undiscerning. Yet, those who know and love the truth can see through and avoid being deceived. Holding fast to the pattern of sound words and guarding the truth is the key to resisting deception. As the apostles foresaw apostasy, they urged certainty in and adherence to God's doctrines as the surest hedge against end-time deceptions. John, in his prophecy, warns of many deceivers who deny Jesus Christ coming in the flesh, emphasizing the need to look to oneself to preserve what has been worked for and to receive a full reward.
