Overcoming the world is the defining mark of true Christians, accomplished through faith that Jesus is the Son of God. Born of God, believers receive a new disposition, enabling them to triumph over the world, Satan, and their own corrupted nature. This victory is beyond human capability; God Himself does the overcoming in those who humbly submit, drawing strength from Christ's boundless resources and the blood of the Lamb. It is a daily, lifelong battle, waged primarily in the mind through selfless choices that prioritize God's will. In Revelation's letters to the seven churches, Christ promises remarkable rewards to overcomers. Since Jesus has already overcome the world, believers, united with Him, become more than conquerors, developing righteous, godly character.

Faith Overcomes the World

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

Christians are defined by their ability to overcome the world, a transformation that marks their spiritual awakening. We have already overcome the world in a sense, and continue to do so through an ongoing resistance against its hostile forces. This conflict is inherent to our faith; without it, one remains spiritually asleep and dead in sin. As believers, we conquer this wicked world through a special conviction that Jesus is the Son of God, a faith that empowers us to triumph over worldly influences. Our victory stems from being born of God, which grants us a new disposition and outlook. This spiritual rebirth, coupled with our relationship with God the Father and Jesus Christ, enables us to overcome not only the world but also satan and our own human nature. The difference lies within us, not in the world itself; two individuals may face the same environment, yet the one born of God stands apart spiritually. Faith is the key to this victory, as it allows us to see the world from God's perspective, partaking in the divine nature. This faith, born of our connection to God, is both a gift and a dynamic force that requires active expression through works. It elevates us above the world's power, which enslaves all who are born into it, providing a strength far beyond our natural capabilities. Our relationship with Jesus Christ is the foundation of overcoming the world. By faith, we draw strength and power from Him, relying on His boundless resources. This faith operates both passively, as we depend directly on Christ's power, and actively, as we work out our belief through righteous actions. It enables us to see the true nature of the world, dominated by sin, and to remain detached from its false promises and solutions. Even in moments of failure, when we feel overwhelmed by sin or despair, faith in Christ assures us of forgiveness and the strength to rise again. We are encouraged by the ultimate glory awaiting us, a vision of perfection and joy in God's presence, which sustains us through the long fight against the world. True Christians are those who overcome, and without this victory, we must examine the foundation of our faith. Faith, as reliance on God's promises, is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things unseen, empowering us to treat the future as present and the invisible as seen.

How Did They Overcome? (Part One)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

In the letters to the seven churches in Revelation 2 and 3, Jesus Christ evaluates the works of His people and expresses a deep concern for whether they overcome. He promises remarkable rewards to those who conquer, including eating from the Tree of Life, escaping the second death, receiving hidden manna and a white stone with a new name, holding power over nations, being clothed in white garments with their names secured in the Book of Life, becoming a pillar in the Temple of God with divine names inscribed, and ultimately sitting with Christ on His throne. Additionally, Revelation 21:7 declares that he who overcomes shall inherit all things, with God affirming, "I will be his God and he shall be My son." Overcoming is vital, and Revelation 12:10-11 highlights that even though satan may accurately accuse God's people of their sins, God chooses to remove their iniquity. The blood of Christ cleanses the conscience from dead works, enabling continued service to the living God without the burden of guilt. This cleansing, coupled with the shield of faith, quenches the fiery darts of the wicked one, reinforcing confidence in the atoning sacrifice of the Lamb of God as essential to overcoming.

Daily Overcoming

Sermonette by Bill Onisick

Overcoming the world is a daily battle against our carnal nature, a lifelong pursuit of holiness in alignment with God's will. It is not a singular event but an ongoing process of making selfless choices every day. The Greek word translated as overcome is nikaó (Strong's 3528), meaning to prevail, conquer, or gain victory, implying an active battle against tendencies that oppose God's purpose. This victory is rooted in faith, as revealed in I John 5:4-5, where the underlying Greek word niké (Strong's 3529), used only once in Scripture, signifies the source of success—our faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Whoever is born of God overcomes the world through Him, for Jesus Himself has overcome it, as stated in John 16:33. Through faith, we become one with Him, partakers of His divine nature, enabled by His Spirit to achieve what seems impossible. As II Peter 1:2-4 affirms, God has given us all things necessary for life and godliness, allowing us to escape the corruption of worldly lust and to pursue holiness. Overcoming involves constant forward progress, purifying our minds, and eradicating sin through self-reflection and evaluation of our choices. The battle to overcome occurs predominantly in our minds, addressing sins such as neglect, idolatry, or failure to care for our physical and spiritual well-being. Every choice presents an opportunity to prioritize God's will over our own, asking what brings Him glory and benefits our relationship with Him and the Body of Christ. Satan deceives us into justifying selfish decisions, but we must remain vigilant, recognizing that all sin separates us from God. As Hebrews 3:12-14 warns, we must exhort one another daily to avoid the hardness of heart and the deceitfulness of sin. The incredible promises to the end-time church are reserved for overcomers—those who awaken, make ready for the Bridegroom's return, and actively pursue holiness. Through Christ, as Paul declares in I Corinthians 15 and Romans 8, we are more than conquerors, given victory by God. Overcoming is the all-day, everyday triumph of selfless decisions, walking in Christ's enabling Spirit of self-control and self-sacrificial love.

How Did They Overcome? (Part Two)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

God is keenly interested in whether His people overcome Satan, including this world which the Devil has shaped, and our own human nature which he has corrupted and continues to influence. The first element in overcoming is the blood of the Lamb. By that blood access opens to the absolute Deity whose every action is motivated by love. Through partaking of the wine at Passover the life in that blood enters symbolically and grants the assurance of the resurrection. Those who have Christ's life in them will be raised up just as He was raised up. Satan may have the power of death but through the resurrection of the dead death is swallowed up in victory. Verse 56 shows that believers abide in Christ and He abides in them. This facet of the blood of the Lamb makes clear that it is part of an ongoing relationship. Thus Christ's blood enables overcoming Satan his world and sin because the Father and the Son are now living in believers and anything needed for victory is available. The blood of the Lamb could be summed up as doing for believers what they cannot do for themselves. Overcoming is actually beyond human capability. God does the overcoming in believers. He does not merely help. Rather believers beseech Him to overcome the corruption in them and then submit to the process He leads through. The human will is wholly insufficient for overcoming corrupted human nature let alone Satan. If God is not the One leading the process of overcoming then efforts will be applied to the wrong things in the wrong time and in the wrong measure. Creating mankind into the image of Elohim is God's project. Believers have responsibilities in this process yet understanding that part begins with comprehending the blood of the Lamb and how much cannot be done by human effort. When believers remain in that humble state of mind God can begin turning and guiding through the overcoming process on His terms.

Overcoming is a Choice

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

We must choose each day whether to follow God or not. We must choose many times each day whether to follow righteousness or sin. We had a choice to respond to God's call and walk out of this world following Jesus Christ or reject it. Since answering that call every decision has been a choice to continue on that path or to stray from it. We choose to overcome sin. We choose to live a life of godliness and righteousness. True Christianity is a religion of constant vigilance in a conscience endeavor striving struggling and making choices to do what is right to please God. It is a choice to seek the Lord. It is a choice to call upon Him. It is a choice to forsake one's way. It is a choice to forsake one's thoughts. It is a choice to return to the Lord. It is a choice to keep justice. It is a choice to do righteousness. It is a choice to keep from defiling the Sabbath day. It is a choice to keep one's hands from doing evil. The choices that we make may be conscious or habitual and automatic due to consistent repetition in godly living. The word overcome in one form or another is mentioned in the Bible only thirty three times. All but seven of these thirty three are found in the New Testament. By far the book that has the most instances of the word overcome or overcomer or overcoming or any other similar form is the book of Revelation. In each one of the seven letters to the churches is an admonition at the end of each section to overcome. Another book with the word overcome in it is I John. There are six instances of overcome in some form in that little epistle. They are split between overcoming the world and overcoming Satan. Jesus said be of good cheer I have overcome the world. Overcoming is a major activity of the church at the end time because Revelation is an end time book and God is looking for His people to be overcomers. Overcoming is of primary importance in this time of encroaching mounting evils and anti God attitudes. We have been called to overcome. Overcoming happens because we choose to do right in everyday choices of life until they become righteous character God's character.
