In the messages to the seven churches, Jesus Christ emphasizes overcoming, with promises of rewards to those who conquer. Revelation 12:10-11 shows overcoming Satan through the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. The blood of Christ cleanses the conscience from dead works. When Satan accuses with past sins, the shield of faith quenches these attacks. In I John, overcoming Satan occurs through daily choices to follow righteousness rather than sin. Pride preceded Satan's fall and is the father of all sins. It motivates disobedience to God and various wrong actions against His will.

How Did They Overcome? (Part One)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

In the messages to the seven churches in Revelation 2 and 3, Jesus Christ evaluates the works of His people and emphasizes the importance of overcoming, promising extraordinary rewards to those who conquer. These rewards include eating from the Tree of Life, not being hurt by the second death, receiving hidden manna and a white stone with a new name, holding power over the nations, being clothed in white garments, becoming a pillar in the Temple of God, and sitting with Christ on His throne. Additionally, Revelation 21:7 declares that he who overcomes shall inherit all things, with God affirming, "I will be his God and he shall be My son." Overcoming is crucial, and Revelation 12:10-11 highlights how it is achieved. satan, as an accuser, points out the sins of God's people with likely accuracy, not needing to fabricate charges. Despite this, God chooses to remove the iniquity rather than exacting the deserved penalty. The blood of Christ plays a vital role in overcoming, cleansing the conscience from dead works to serve the living God, as stated in Hebrews 9:14. When satan uses knowledge of past sins as fiery darts to discourage and bring despair, the shield of faith, rooted in confidence in the atoning sacrifice of the Lamb of God, quenches these attacks. By acknowledging sins, repenting, and seeking forgiveness, Christ's blood is applied, cleansing the conscience and enabling continued service to God without the burden of guilt.

Overcoming is a Choice

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Overcoming satan forms one part of the discussion in the book of I John where instances of the word overcome are divided between overcoming the world and overcoming satan. Jesus Christ stated that He has overcome the world. It was only through the power of God and His watchful care that rejection of this present evil world occurred along with rejection of its corruption and rejection of its rule by satan the devil to begin the journey to the Kingdom of God. Daily choices to follow righteousness rather than sin enable this overcoming of satan.

Checklist for Overcoming

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Pride preceded satan's fall and his subsequent challenge of God in a war. Pride is ultimately the father of all sins, whether satan's or ours. It moves one to exalt the will against God and thus disobey. It motivates one to put others down, to gossip, to talebear, to lie to make oneself look good. Pride justifies sins before others. It moves one to seek the highest seat, to fear, to run from correction, to pursue fads, to want to be in the in-crowd, and to gripe and to murmur. It is at the foundation of almost everything done against the will of God.
