Hearing and Understanding the Truth
Sermonette by Cody FordAs we enter the Christmas season with its allure, we must remember the truth of our calling and seek God's ways over the world's festivities. Christmas is a massive event that costs most families in the United States and other western countries a large part of their budgets for all the gifts, hosting, and travel. Even though many Christians in the United States know the pagan origins of it starting with Saturnalia and Norse origins of Santa Claus, many continue to follow it thinking the good outweighs any of the downsides of its origins. Matthew 13 says that the truth is hidden behind the parables and not given to the large audiences. Isaiah 44:18 says much of this comes because most do not humble themselves to listen to the way of God. While many of the mature members of the church are not tempted to rush off to participate in Christmas, their children or the younger called-out ones may be tempted to join with their friends, families, and peers to belong to the ways of society. We are advised to focus on the ultimate prize of our Election and realize how insignificant the customs of the world are.
