What Sin Does
Article by John W. RitenbaughSin destroys the will, the power by which the mind makes choices and acts to carry them out. At first, against his will, a person engages in forbidden pleasure out of weakness, curiosity, or sheer carnality. If the practice continues, he sins because he cannot help doing so, becoming addicted to it. Once a sin becomes a habit, he considers it almost a necessity, and when it becomes a necessity, his destiny is produced. The deceitfulness of sin is seductively misleading, promising pleasure, contentment, and fulfillment, but delivering only fleeting and unsatisfying results. This lure drives individuals into greater perversions until it results in death. Along this path, sin quietly produces hardness of heart, paralyzing right action and making repentance impossible. Eventually, the will to do right is completely gone.
