The Remnant
'Prophecy Watch' by Richard T. RitenbaughThe concept of a remnant, often hidden by English translations, appears frequently in the Bible, carrying the meaning of what is left, survivors, or escapees. Among the various remnants mentioned by biblical writers, the spiritual remnant pertains specifically to Christians. This small group of God-fearing individuals will endure persecutions inspired by satan in the near future, and those who prevail are promised wonderful blessings and rewards for their faithfulness. As Paul recounts in Romans 11:1-5, a remnant exists according to the election of grace, termed the elect, who have been called and chosen by God through grace, receiving spiritual redemption and a relationship with Him. Speculation on the size of this spiritual remnant arises from figures like the 7,000 mentioned in I Kings 19:18 and Romans 11:4. If this number represents one-tenth of spiritual Israel, akin to the physical remnant of Israel, the total could be 70,000, though the current state of the church suggests the number might be even smaller. Ezekiel 5:1-5 hints at an even tinier fraction, possibly the spiritual remnant, protected by God in an almost insignificant number. II Thessalonians 2:1-3 warns of a falling away from truth before Christ's return, orchestrated by satan, leading to the church's disintegration. Revelation 12:7-17 describes end-time events where satan, cast down to earth, seeks to persecute the elect, but God shields this faithful remnant for three and a half years. Unable to destroy them, the devil turns to persecute the spiritually weak Christians left unprotected during the Great Tribulation. Isaiah 33:14-17 addresses who will survive the coming persecution, with God affirming that the righteous will endure, protected in a mountainous fortress where they are supplied with food and drink, possibly taught by the King, Jesus Christ, in this place of safety. Additionally, the letters to the churches in Revelation 2 and 3 mention a remnant: the rest in Thyatira, a few names in Sardis, and an implied promise of protection for Philadelphia, while Laodicea must face trials.
The Doctrine of Israel (Part Seven): Romans 9
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughWithin the history of Israel, there exists a distinction between the broader physical nation and a righteous remnant, a smaller group chosen by God. This remnant, often a minority, stands in a unique and favored position under Him. God works closely with these righteous few, teaching them from His Word and granting them an inner peace amidst outward turmoil. They trust in His plan, even when disaster seems to surround them, knowing that He will not forsake His people, whether they are the faithful remnant or the broader nation that has strayed. This righteous remnant, as seen in examples like the 7,000 preserved during Elijah's time, represents a spiritual Israel within the physical nation. God's election prioritizes this spiritual remnant over mere physical descent, focusing on those called according to His purpose. Through history, He has chosen to work with this small element, separating them from the majority who fail to follow His covenant. These elect ones are considered the true seed of Abraham through Isaac, embodying the children of promise rather than the children of the flesh. God's long-term plan involves working with this remnant during the present age, a process that will ultimately be vindicated as righteousness. Divine justice will be manifested in favor of the righteous, and those with honest hearts will recognize and follow it. Even though the path may seem harsh, with judgments and challenges facing His people, the outcome will reveal His goodness. The remnant, formed through election and grace, plays a crucial role in His purpose, serving as vessels of mercy prepared for glory. This group, which includes both Jews and Gentiles, will contribute to the eventual restoration of the broader nation, ensuring that His mercy extends to all in the end.
The Second Exodus (Part One)
'Prophecy Watch' by David C. GrabbeThe prophecies of the Bible reveal that only a remnant of the descendants of Jacob will return during the Second Exodus, a time of unprecedented crisis known as Jacob's Trouble. Even though the current population of Israelites and Jews numbers in the hundreds of millions, the percentage who survive this great tribulation will likely be small. Despite the anguish, sorrow, and intense pain likened to labor, there is hope for Israel. The suffering will not end in total annihilation, for Jacob shall be saved out of it. Though a dear price will be paid in human lives, the peoples of Jacob will ultimately survive and receive both physical and spiritual blessings.
