God is the Shepherd who guards His flock, and those under His personal care look to Him as Protector and Provider for every need. Because human beings are weak, corruptible, and mortal, they must depend on Him entirely, as Christ Himself acknowledged: "I can of Myself do nothing." Under His care, His people lack nothing needed to support body and life, as Psalm 34:9-10 and Matthew 6:25-34 also affirm. Like lambs grazing, resting, and drinking beside still waters, they find spiritual counterparts in Bible study, meditation, and prayer. The New Testament calls God's people sheep or lambs, and Jesus is both the Good Shepherd and the Lamb of God. The Shepherd restores the soul, redeeming and forgiving the sinner. He leads in the paths of righteousness, which are His commandments, and even the will to obey comes from Him, for no one can find true righteousness unless God leads him to it. His presence removes fear, even in the valley of the shadow of death, since peace of mind comes only from Him and He gives a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. He blesses His people even amid enemies, supplying exceedingly abundantly above all they ask or think. Those who follow Him can look forward to a full physical life and then eternal life in God's Kingdom.
