RitenbaughCanaan is a son in the Genesis 10 table of nations, and the Canaanites are among the peoples that make up much of the Islamic and Middle Eastern world today. Through Cush, Mizraim, and Canaan come the descendants who now live as Egyptians, Indians, Indonesians, and African nations. They are not neatly separated by modern national boundaries but are probably mixed together with the descendants of Ishmael, Lot, and Joktan. The Canaanites also stand with the Hittites, Amorites, and other nations that God drove out before Israel in Deuteronomy 7. God commanded Israel to make no covenant with them and to avoid intermarriage, because He did not want the cultures mixed. Mixing leads to idolatry and a host of other sins, and religion is the most powerful influence shaping a nation's culture. The same pattern repeats today. The Israelitish nations, which also displaced other peoples when they settled their lands, now find descendants of ancient enemies streaming into them at God's direction as a curse for national disobedience. Because God, Satan, and human nature never change, the same basic conflict between the same basic peoples keeps recurring.
