The God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses
Sermonette by David C. GrabbeIn the accounts of Abraham's encounters with God, the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, instructing him not to harm his son Isaac, declaring, "Now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me." The Angel further swore by Himself, affirming the LORD's promise to bless Abraham, multiply his descendants, and ensure that through his seed all nations would be blessed due to his obedience. Abraham recognized this Angel as his God, naming the place "The LORD will provide," indicating that the Angel was central to this divine interaction and not merely a messenger. Similarly, with Jacob, the Angel of God spoke in a dream, identifying Himself as the God of Bethel, where Jacob had anointed a pillar and made a vow to Him. This Angel, also the God of Bethel, was the LORD God of Abraham and Isaac, who promised the land to their descendants. On his deathbed, Jacob blessed Joseph, referring to the God before whom Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who sustained him, and the Angel who redeemed him from evil, as the same Being. Thus, the Angel of the Lord was Jacob's God, the One with whom the fathers interacted and who made promises to them.
