God's Spiritual House

Sermon by Ronny H. Graham

The tribe of Levi was uniquely set apart by God for a sacred purpose among the children of Israel. As described in Numbers 1:47-53, the Levites were not numbered among the other tribes for military service or census, for the Lord had spoken to Moses to appoint them over the tabernacle of the Testimony. They were tasked with bearing the tabernacle and all its furnishings, attending to its needs, and camping around it to guard it. When the tabernacle moved, the Levites were to take it down and set it up, ensuring that no outsider came near, under penalty of death, to prevent wrath upon the congregation. This high calling is further illustrated in Exodus 32:25-30, following the incident of the Golden Calf. When Moses called for those on the Lord's side to join him, only the sons of Levi responded. They were instructed to uphold God's law by slaying those who had sinned, resulting in about three thousand deaths that day. For their unwavering commitment, Moses called them to consecrate themselves to the Lord, and a blessing was bestowed upon them for prioritizing God's law above personal ties. The Levites were chosen as God's tribe, dedicated to the care and protection of His dwelling place. Their role was exclusive, with strict boundaries ensuring that no unauthorized person could approach the tabernacle, emphasizing the seriousness with which God regards His holy Temple.
