God's Spiritual House

Sermon by Ronny H. Graham

The Levites were uniquely set apart by God for a sacred purpose among the children of Israel. As recorded in Numbers 1:47-53, they were not numbered among the other tribes for census or war, for the Lord had spoken to Moses to appoint them over the tabernacle of the Testimony, its furnishings, and all related duties. They were tasked with bearing the tabernacle, attending to it, setting it up, taking it down, and camping around it to guard it. Any outsider who approached was to be put to death, ensuring that no wrath would come upon the congregation of Israel, as the Levites kept charge of God's dwelling place. This high calling meant they belonged to God as His chosen tribe, tasked with protecting the sanctity of the Tabernacle with their lives. In a pivotal moment after the Golden Calf incident, as described in Exodus 32:25-30, Moses called out for those on the Lord's side to come to him, and all the sons of Levi responded. They were instructed to uphold God's law by slaying those who had sinned, resulting in about three thousand deaths. For their unwavering commitment, even against their own kin, Moses called them to consecrate themselves to the Lord, and a blessing was bestowed upon them. This act demonstrated that God's law was their first priority, reinforcing their role as guardians of His truth and His dwelling place.
