Searching for Israel (Part One): The Promises to the Faithful
Article by Charles WhitakerThe book of Genesis records a number of promises God made to the patriarch Abraham, which serve as search criteria to identify modern-day Israel. God appeared to Abraham in Haran, calling him to Canaan, and promised to multiply him and grant him control over strategic military and commercial positions, gates, in his enemies' territories. This promise, based on Abraham's obedience in the near-sacrifice of Isaac, carries the weight of an oath as God swore by Himself. God also reminded Abraham of His initial promise that his seed would be a blessing to all nations. Additionally, God restated these promises to Abraham's son, Isaac, and grandson, Jacob, affirming the same commitments of land, a multitude of descendants spreading in all directions, and the Seed who would bless all nations. These promises, recorded in Genesis, remain key identifiers for recognizing modern-day Israel.

Abraham's One God
Article by Mike FordGod's promises to Abraham stand as a testament to His unwavering commitment to those who place Him first in their lives. Through Abraham's ultimate test of faith, when He was asked to sacrifice his only son Isaac, God reaffirmed His covenant. After Abraham demonstrated his complete obedience and fear of God by not withholding his son, the Angel of the Lord declared, "By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son, in blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying, I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice." These promises became unconditional due to Abraham's unwavering loyalty, showing that God fulfills His word when He holds the foremost place in one's heart. God's plan, as revealed through this profound example, hinges on His being the sole focus of worship and trust, ensuring provision and blessing for those who yield completely to Him.
The Certainty of God's Promises
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Kim MyersGod made profound promises to Abraham, assuring him that his offspring would become a great nation, be blessed, and that his name would be great. Through Abraham's descendants, all nations of the earth would be blessed, and those who do no harm to them would also be blessed, while those who cause harm would face punishment from Him. God further promised that Abraham's offspring would multiply beyond imagination and spread across the earth, beginning with one son, Isaac, born to him and Sarah. Additionally, God vowed to give Abraham's seed vast land, a promise fulfilled during the reigns of King David and King Solomon, when Israel controlled territory from the Nile to the Euphrates River, becoming a dominant power economically and militarily in the Middle East. Under their rule, Israel amassed immense wealth and prestige, with silver as common as rocks in Jerusalem, showcasing how abundantly God kept His word. God also protected and prospered Abraham's descendants, such as Ephraim and Manasseh, placing them in strategic locations like islands and continents for defense, and intervening in history to safeguard them against powerful enemies. Through these acts, God demonstrated His faithfulness, blessing Abraham's seed far beyond what could have been imagined, proving that He indeed keeps His promises.
Abraham's Sacrifice (Part Five): Promises Confirmed
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughGod's promises to Abraham stand as a testament to His unwavering faithfulness and divine character. In Genesis 22, after Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac, God reaffirms His covenant, swearing by Himself—an oath backed by His own righteousness and unchanging nature—that He will fulfill what He has declared. He promises Abraham that through his seed, all nations will be blessed, a profound assurance of a future Descendant who will bring salvation to the world. This unconditional promise does not depend on human action but rests solely on God's integrity, ensuring its fulfillment regardless of circumstances. Additionally, God confirms to Abraham blessings of numerous descendants and victory over enemies, as well as the ultimate spiritual promise of a Savior. This covenant, reiterated in passages like Hebrews 6, highlights the immutable nature of God's word, offering strong consolation and assurance that He will complete His work in those He calls. Through Abraham's faith and obedience, God reveals His providence, providing what is needed at the right time, as seen in the provision of the ram for the sacrifice. This act underscores that God sees and provides, a truth that extends to all who trust in Him. God's oath to Abraham, backed by His perfect character, guarantees that His promises will not fail. As the ultimate expression of this covenant, Jesus Christ, the great Descendant, fulfills the type of Isaac's sacrifice through His selfless work, death, and resurrection, becoming the High Priest who mediates and provides all that is needed for eternal life in His Kingdom. This assurance, rooted in God's unchanging nature, confirms that He will ensure the completion of His plan in each person He chooses, providing everything necessary without fail.

God's Promises Are Sure!
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughGod's promises to Abraham are a foundational element in the unfolding of divine purpose as seen in Genesis. In Genesis 17:23, the covenant with Abraham is marked by circumcision, establishing a significant event that later aligns with a festival date important to Christianity. Exodus 12:41 and Galatians 3:16-18 further connect this covenant to the Exodus, occurring 430 years to the very day from when Abraham made the covenant with God. These passages confirm that the Abrahamic covenant, the introduction of circumcision, and Israel's departure from Egypt took place on Abib 15, the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Through these events, God's assurance to Abraham sets a precedent for the fulfillment of His promises, echoing the certainty of future prophecies.
