An Acceptable Gift
CGG Weekly by David C. GrabbeIn the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus Christ expounds on the spiritual intent of His law, providing specific instructions to ensure that any gifts brought to Him are acceptable. If we know that a brother has a grievance against us, whether right or wrong, we are responsible to take the first step toward reconciliation. Even though reconciliation is not always immediately possible, our willingness to humble ourselves and make the effort holds far greater value to God than any monetary token of devotion. Christ instructs us to attempt reconciliation before making an offering, as this act requires adopting the same attitude and intent toward our brother that God requires of us when presenting a gift to Him. What God is most interested in is the heart behind the offering, and this heart is revealed in what we are willing to do for the sake of a brother.
