The period from the wave sheaf offering to Pentecost forms a unified picture of God's harvest of firstfruits. The wave sheaf, offered at the start of the barley harvest, represents Jesus Christ as the first of the firstfruits, the first to be resurrected, accepted by the Father, and designated the firstborn of many brethren. Fifty days later the two leavened loaves waved at Pentecost represent the saints who follow Him. These saints constitute the church of the firstborn, registered in heaven and identified with the general assembly of the firstborn. Scripture links the title directly to the resurrection harvest: Christ is the firstfruits, and afterward those who are His at His coming share the same harvest. James confirms that God brings forth believers by the word of truth so that they may be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures. Hebrews 12 presents the same company as the church of the firstborn who have come to Mount Zion, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to the spirits of just men made perfect. This identification carries forward the meaning of the entire fifty-day count. The wave sheaf pictures Christ's perfect sacrifice and acceptance; the final waving of the loaves pictures the Father's acceptance of fallible yet sanctified human beings into His Family. The saints therefore stand in the same spiritual harvest as Christ, set apart and prepared through the Holy Spirit for inclusion among the firstborn. Their calling, sanctification, and future glorification at the resurrection complete the pattern established by the wave sheaf and fulfilled at Pentecost.
