Truth and God's Governance (Part One)
CGG Weekly by David C. GrabbeIn a world steeped in universal deceit, speaking the truth becomes a revolutionary act, challenging the powers that govern. Jesus Christ, though not a typical revolutionary seeking to overthrow human regimes, spoke a truth so radical that it led to His cruel death. During His trial before Pontius Pilate, He declared that He came into the world to bear witness to the truth, stating that everyone who is of the truth hears, understands, and obeys His voice. Pilate's rhetorical question, "What is truth?" reflects a deeper inquiry beyond mere factual accuracy, touching on the essence of reality itself. The Greek word translated as truth, "aletheia," aligns more closely with reality, revealing that Jesus was bearing witness to the highest plane of reality—God's sovereignty and governance, which is the most real and permanent factor in existence. Other elements, though real, exist on a lower, temporary level and are less enduring than God's unchanging control over His creation. Jesus' testimony to this reality is another way of expressing that He came to preach the gospel of the Kingdom of God, a literal Kingdom to be established on earth where God's governance will be clearly seen. He affirmed that everyone rooted in this reality of God's Kingdom hears and obeys His voice as the Spokesman of that truth. Understanding this foundational reality—God's governance over all creation—provides a new lens through which to view life. A humble person submits to this reality, specifically to God's sovereignty, justice, and will. John the Baptist exemplified this humility by recognizing God's governance as the source of all authority, willingly accepting his role and submitting to the reality that Christ must increase while he must decrease. This submission to God's reality underscores why Jesus declared no one greater than John the Baptist.
