By the Waters of Ahava
Article by Ted E. BowlingEzra and his company of about six thousand people faced seven hundred miles of dangerous travel over four months after their three-day fast at the river of Ahava. They had to place their trust in God every day and with every step of the journey to reach Jerusalem safely. God answered their prayer by placing His hand upon them and delivering them from the enemy and from ambush along the road. This daily dependence formed the practical outworking of Ezra's earlier decision to rely solely on divine protection rather than request an armed escort from Artaxerxes. Ezra had already prepared his heart through years of seeking the Law of the Lord, doing it, and teaching its statutes and ordinances, which equipped him to lead by example under pressure. The same pattern of daily preparation extends to all who follow God. Lives of faith require continual humbling through prayer, occasional fasting, and study of God's Word so that problems and trials can be met with decisive trust rather than wavering. Such consistent readiness turns believers into reliable witnesses to mates, families, neighbors, and coworkers, training them for greater responsibilities ahead. Knowledge of God's past faithfulness strengthens endurance when facing the difficult times that will precede Christ's return, allowing the same daily trust modeled at the waters of Ahava to sustain progress through every trial.
